well i just figured i would get this started since the race is exactly 3 months from today. i live minutes from the park where this race will held so it is on my mind a lot. the bike and swim routes really can't be practiced (bike goes on to a busy street with no shoulder and there is no swimming in the lake other than for the tri) but i do plan to train on the run route. i'm doing the sprint distance and just looking to hear from anyone who will be at the race as well.

I'll be there.  Really looking forward to it.  I just moved to Georgia from NJ several months ago but I'm coming up just for this race.  It'll be my 2nd tri ever and I'll be doing it with a buddy who will be doing this as his first tri.

I'm looking forward to meeting some fellow BTers.

I'll be there doing the sprint distance. I guess you could say its my A race, if one can even have an A race in their first season. I figure school will be over for a month leading up to this which lightens up my work load so I can focus on training. I mean I still have to work just no lesson plans or grading or 35 mile drive.

I don't know if you've gotten the latest updates but it look like new for this year's will be:

Beach start for the swim...no treading water!

One loop Olympic bike course

Run almost totally on the paved joggng trails...shade!!!

If you live near the park and see them start repairs on the Assunpink Bridge near the park on Quakerbridge don't worry...we've already discussed it with County DOT and the race will be unaffected.

Train hard

anybody who did it last year, talk to me about that lake.  we take the kids pedal boating in it all the time and shall i say it doesn't look too inviting.  my philosophy right now is that it will only make me go faster...is it bad?

Please stop reminding me how long I have until IMLP (it's the same day as the NJ State Tri or else I would have done the NJ State Tri as well this year)

I did the race last year.  The water looks kind of funky in the lake with all the pond scum and whatever else is in lakes (I'm more used to the ocean), but the water quality seemed fine.  I've done races in a lot worse water conditions.  Expect the lake to be hot once again - it was like 83 supposedly on race day- someone said it was like 85 or 86 the day before the race though(the USAT rule of wetsuits allowed but one was not eligible for awards etc was in effect last year which I liked being originally a swimmer   ).  The Olympic distance swim was long last year-more like 1/2 Iron distance- judging from my time and conversations I had with other racers who would be better able to judge distance.

One question I do have- with the new beach, will that mean that the racers will not be running up that very painful boat ramp with the rough concrete coming out of the water?

Well...we figured making you swim a little extra would be good training for IMLP

This years swim will be 100%, dead on, balls accurate (to borrow a phrase from Miss Mona Lisa Vito).

We're going to astro turf the ramp this year.

The one phenomenon we're trying to deal with is the swim caps. For some reason, and I've never seen this before or since, everyond dropped their swim cap as they exited the water. We had three people just working on constantly clearing them out.

Freekin hillarious quote!

As for dropping the swim caps...I still have mine. Probably wear it to the Open Water swim tomorrow as long as it dosn't rain.

One other thing I might add. Not sure if anything can be done. There were huge bolder sized rocks just where you could start to stand up on the boat ramp. Not sure if they can be moved or cleared. If not then it's not a big deal. Just a little shocking to stand up and put your feet down and step on unstable rocks.

And to comment on the water...I though the water was fine. It's a lake for god sake. There are a lot worse places to swim in NJ. I though it was totally fine.

yeah, i realize its a lake.  i guess it is more a mental thing of being on and around it so much and never being allowed in it, maybe that makes it seem worse than it appears.

I chose this event as my first try at a Tri (sprint).

Very much looking forward to the day. Hopefully the lake is and will be calm??? It'll be my first OWS in competition too. I'll hit a few local lakes for some practice before the big day, but I'm not sure how to simulate crowds and waves properly. Not that I really want to anyway. Heck, I get annoyed when someone shares my lap lane. Not at them, but at the fact that it seems like there's no room to move and I'm always about 2 seconds from feeling like I'm drowning...

Bike course is mostly flat? The race description says it is, but you never know... (hoping it is).

Would be great to say HELLO to any of you on race day.

The bike is VERY flat...as is the run.

The lake is calm...only if we get a lot of wind will it become choppy. Don't count on wearing a wetsuit. Last year we got lucky and the rain the night before cooled the lake off a bit so it was wetsuit legal (although those who wore them were ineligible for awards).

Good luck.

I did it last year, and am signed up again. I thought it was a top quality event. The water wasn't a problem in the least. Swimming is my weakest sport, so the warm temps freaked me out. I could have worn the wetsuit but decided to go for broke and did my first non-wetsuit OWS, and with an in-water start! But other than that, I thought they did a very good job.

I volunteered last year for the day-before registration - will do it again this year.

I was just looking at the front page for the race and it says we get a TYR bag for finishing, and shows the TYR transition bag. Not a bad deal if you ask me I was going to buy one but maybe I'll hold off.

I'll be there for the sprint tri. This will be my first tri, and I'm looking forward to it (of course, I'm petrified as well, but that's a given). I'm Sluggo's friend that he convinced (rather, conned) into joining him for the race. All kidding aside, I'm looking forward to it, and it should be a great time.

That's great that the water was so warm last year - I was concerned about it as I've yet to do an OWS.

I'm looking forward to talking to everyone on the board as we head up to race time!

I'm signed up for the NJ Tri - sprint length -- 1st time. Looking forward to it -- putting a LOT of pressure on myself but feeling good -- now 12 weeks out. How many people started and finished the event last year? trying to get a sense of what kind of crowd to expect.

There were a little over 1,400 between the two distances. I think there were around 1,200 finishers. Make sure you don't put too much pressure on yourself...don't forget to enjoy yourself.

Big race like Larry said. 1400 very supportive and enthusiastic people. There was a great vibe in the air last year with this race. It just felt like it was at the right time and in the right place if that helps.

Get to the expo the day before and walk around. Lots of cool vendors to see and of course don't miss the free massage's that they are giving out. Get your bike checked out and a last minute tune up if need be and get familiar with the "lay of the land." Helps to settle the nerves the day before if this will be your first race. And one last thing. Get there early on race day if it’s your first race. 1400 people and a lot of traffic and cars can make for a very unpleasant rushed feeling.

Great race to choose as a first. It will leave a good impression on you...

The parking on race day will be much easier this year. Last year I think it was a case of overthinking things. Once it backed up and we went to the overflow plan we were able to get people parked very quickly. That's now plan "A".

Mike...are you going to make the open water swim Thursday night?

I should be good for this coming Thursday. How cold is the water? Last week I was stuck picking up my daughter and got caught in a pinch.

It was around 60. Nobody seemed to mind too much so I guess (with a wetsuit) it wasn't so bad. With the warmer weather we've been having I would guess it will be in the 62-63 range.

I actually mssed last week also, I had to attend a meeting.

I'll be there this week though...hope to see you there.
