Subject: My Brakes rub, How do you fix that?

I have a problem and I am not very bike savvy. Hoping someone would know here.

My back brakes are rubbing on the rim of my tire. It hasn't been doing that, just started happening all of a sudden.  One brake pad is on the rim so that it makes a scrubbing sound when the tire spins, the other side of the brake has at least a quarter inch of day light between the tire and the pad.

Now how do I fix that? The tire seems straight and in line with the front one. Do I loosen the tire? Loosen the bolt on the back of the brake? Or adjust those wires coming from the brake handles? Not sure what to fix where.

Any help?

If they were previously OK, I'd say the wheel probably just isn't centered in the dropout. To check, look at the space between the tire and the chainstay, on each side. If there's a discrepancy between the  two sides, then that's your problem. Open the quick release, center the wheel, and close it back up.

It occasionally happens to me where the entire brake caliper will rotate to one side...if that's the case (if you only have one brake pad rubbing) just gently but firmly turn the brake back towards center.

I already tried to manhandle the U-shaped brake back into position, but it is tight and will not budge. I guess that means it didn't move? I'd have to loosen it to reposition it.

I guess that means it is the tire? I'll check the placement when I get home. And readjust it from there. Just loosen it a bit and flip the quick release back into place I guess.

Does the pad that is rubbing rub all the way around the rim when you turn it or just in a spot or two? If it's just in a couple spots, then the wheel probably needs to be trued.

If the rim is straight, then check for an adjusting allen screw on top of the caliper (drive side of the bike more than likely.) If you have one, give it a turn and you will be able to see the pads move to/from the rim.

See this link.

Hope that helps.

1. Spin the wheel and verify that it is indeed the brake and not the wheel that is out of true or improperly seated.

2. If it is the brake, loosen the hex nut behind the brake, center the brake by hand, and re-tighten, the hex nut.

3. If the wheel is not seated properly, loosen the quick release skewer, seat the wheel properly and tighten the skewer.

4. If the wheel is out of true, get it trued by an expert.

I adjusted the little screw on top of the calipers and monkeyed with the hex screw and got it fixed. The wheel spins freely now with no scrub.

Thanks everyone!
