Sunny
Total Time = 1h 49m
Overall Rank = 248/332
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 40/50
Pre-race routine:

Got there 1.5 hours before packet pick up. I didn't realize I live only an hour away.
Event warmup:

1/4 mi jog and jumped in the water and swam a little. Stroke was good, and I felt strong; more on that later.
Swim
  • 17m 18s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

Never got into a groove with my stroke and breathing. Maybe it was the chop created by other swimmers, but my heart rate never settled. This was my first OWS so I am blaming it on that. Plus, the water was frign COLD.
What would you do differently?:

Go to the outside and start slower. Practice swimming in the Potomac; yuck!
Transition 1
  • 02m 35s
Comments:

Damn, no one told me there was going to be an off-road section getting to the mount / dismount line. I ran in my bike shoes, which was a little funky.
What would you do differently?:

Settle down and not rush.
Bike
  • 58m 47s
  • 18 miles
  • 18.37 mile/hr
Comments:

First time on the course so I pushed it in all the wrong places of course :) I should have known that those long descents had to be followed by some uphill. I can't complain because my goal was to average 18 mph. The police did an excellent job stopping traffic for everyone. There was one hill that I managed a meager 11 mph up in my granny gear. YUCK! As in the swim, I didn't expect my HR to be as high as it was for the entire ride. It was a decent ride; only two major turns on the course, and the last one was a little hairy considering the speed that I had when entering the turn. I managed to suck a gel down around mile 10 or 12.

What would you do differently?:

Practice hills more! Need to find some first.
Transition 2
  • 00m 57s
Comments:

Good transition. More off-roading in the bike shoes = scary
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 29m 59s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

Hot, hot, hot! I didn't feel my legs until mile 2. Definitely didn't meet my 25 min goal. No excuses here. It just sucked, and I didn't push it as hard as I could have. I came home and cut the grass for God's sake. I need to learn to run through the pain and kick ass. That first hill kicked mine instead.
What would you do differently?:

More bike/run bricks. Find some hills.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, a little stretching, pack up.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

No experience in OWS and not enough bricks.

Event comments:

I appreciated all the "War Eagles!"

Tough day for your first OWS -- it was pretty cold (not as bad as I feared, though).

Looks like you hit that water just like me and realized, this is crazy! Good race though, keep up the training.

Thanks! That water was COLD; that is the coldest water I have ever been in. At the pool today, I practiced rotating my head more so that I am almost looking at the roof during breaths. I think that will help with settling down and dealing with all the extra water action at the surface.

You might want to know an interesting tidbit about the DCTriclub and their discount over at Capital Hill Bikes. http://www.dctriclub.org/staticpages/index.php?page=merchant. They don't carry Cervelo, or Quintana Roo, but they have some nice Road bikes and few Tri bikes. The three in Georgetown are all different in personalities, visit them all, all three, in my opinion are hard sellers. In my opinion as well, I would stay away from City Bikes as they haven't shown me any love for Triathletes. Good Luck on what is not an easy task!

Full disclosure: I work PT as a bike assembler at the Stafford store. I was hanging around there so much I figured I might as well learn something and get paid!

We carry tri and road bikes from Trek and Lemond, including some Trek WSD for the ladies. I am holding off on a tri bike myself, because I am deploying soon (again?), but I'd buy a Trek Equinox 7 in a second. Good 105 gruppo (Dura Ace shifters) for a guy like me, aluminum frame, not-too-flashy wheels - at a sweet price.

Without turning this into a sales pitch, I'd recommend giving the store a call or checking the website (link below). Jamie, the manager at the Stafford shop, is an accomplished triathlete himself and runs a coaching service. His wife Sarah is an employee and a triathlete too. Between them they have a lot of knowledge.

Just sayin'.

If you're headed down this way, let me know. I'd like to meet you in person and it's always fun to shop vicariously!
