Comments:

I was one of the last to make it to the start, but as we where running in the direction everybody was walking to the start form, it meant I was in the frontline, I like that then I don’t have to worry about slower runners in my way........I am then the slow one every body else has to avoid, so I am actually the same type of person that I am trying to avoid, hmmm. Well I do have a tendency to start way to fast so I kind of belong in the front :)

The gun went off, and I accelerated away from the people next to me. Just 3 people in front of me, all good runners, when it is only 2°C don’t try to keep up with people in shorts ! I just focused on finding a good rhythm, and slowing down. As I said earlier I ALWAYS starts to fast, and end up dieing at the end, so people slowly started to pass me, I tried to hang on a bit, but I could feel that there pace was just too high, so I just let them glide by. Then the leading women went by me :( This is when I said, enough is enough, and I tried to draft her, FYI not easy to do when the person in front is a good foot and a half smaller then you !!!! We where together as the first k marker flew by, I looked at my watch and saw 3:19 :o :o That was too fast ! My goal was to do around 18:45, 20 seconds from my PB, which I did not think I had any chance of getting close to, I was almost mad at myself, had I not gotten the point about not starting out like a freaking rookie. I eased of a bit, and the little girl started to pull away, all I was trying to do now was to get my breathing under control, well it was more like not making it any faster. 2k came up fast 3:39 What, how, is my watch correct ??? I could not believe it. I am always calculating out from a 20 min 5k, that is 4 min/k and I had now already gained 1 min !!! I then thought that I might just beat my goal. ½ way through and the start of the second lap, the 2 laps are not quite identical but very close, so the second lap started with a long uphill section, I focused on not trying to “overpower” the hill but glide over it, and before I knew it I was over, great :) 3k 3:42 I was getting slower but I was still faster then my predicted pace of 3:45, and the finish line was almost in sight. At 3.5k somebody came up to me and just ran by me !!!! I tried for maybe 3 seconds to hang on, but no way. How slow did he start ?? Before I knew it he had pasted the little girl in front, it was now that I realized that she was not more then 25m ahead and it seemed like I was very slowly getting back to her. 4k 3:46, just 1k to go, a couple of turns, a very short uphill, then a little downhill to the finish straight. All I could concentrate on was getting close to the little girl, and I was getting there. As we hit the downhill part I had her :) She noticed that I was now right behind her and she increased her speed, but I was sticking to her, I felt like I could not good any faster, so the only option..........sprint....but when to start, I did not want to go to early, but I also did not want to leave it to the last second. It took maybe 5 second not more, to decide where to kick for the last time, and maybe this gave me a very short but needed mental break. There was this car that was not parked very well, it´s backend was sticking out, this was where I kicked ! Around 150m before the goal, I absolutely flew by the little girl :) :) I could she that she tried to sprint too, but she could NOT match my speed, and I had left her behind as I crossed the finish line. The clock showed 17:37 :o I could not believe it, how did I do that ?? Well as it turned out the clock was wrong by 20 seconds :( But I still did the last k in 3:30, and my finale time was 17:57 :o A new PB by 28 seconds :) :) :) Oh yes, that made all that running through the winter worth it.

What would you do differently?:

Start a bit slower, maybe start to sprint a little sooner ( I could probably have gained a second or 2) :)
Post race
Warm down:

Did an easy run around the lake to get back to the car.
Then drove home to eat and get ready for the afternoons easy bike session.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The same as always....:) Training

Event comments:

As this was the first real race of the year everybody was there, and I finished 15th :) Could I be any happier ? I don’t think so :)
There is just one think that bother me ! I had a good race, there was over 200 people taking part, but in the end the ONLY one I overtook, was a little girl !!!!!!!!! :)

Heheh. You always manage to paint a nice mental picture of the whole event! Great work - both on the track AND writing your masterpiece. Can't wait to hear about the duathlon

Nice job on the PB!! You're speedy. (is it bad that I was rooting for the "little girl"?)

Now about those shorts, I see no reason for 36 degree weather to stop you!! Seriously, though, that's too cold to be outside.

Great job. Normally, I would say, "Congrats on the PR," but I think in this case the congratulations should go to beating the little girl . haha.

Good job. You're going to do really well this season .
