Subject: Toenail are a fallin'

I just finished my first UltraMarathon this Saturday.  A 50K (actually 32 miles but whose counting huh?) and I have a question.  I did a 25K race (17 mile) run last year and had one nail come off.  Saturday's run was by far my farthest run and farthest race and my dogs are barking.  I'll be losing one nail today and 3 more by the end of the week.  At the finish, I saw a guys feet that had really short nails.  I told him about mine bleeding and he said he clips his very short because he runs alot and didn't want to lose any more.  Does anyone do this????  Am I screwed and should just get to used to losing mine or can I do some preventive measures???

Thanks in advance for the advice......  Little Tom

I lost two nails after my last marathon (from rubbing the top front of my shoe).

One of the nails had fallen out previously after an IM.  I just switched shoes and am trying different toe guards.  I was wearing NB 1221's and I just switched to Brooks Beast.

Ya know, that could have been it.  I wear Nimbus', but for this particular race I swtiched to Mizuno Trail Shoes.  I have about 2 weeks and 30 miles in them (If 30, maybe 15 or 20).  Maybe I just hadn't worn them in good enough.  It just seems long distances make my toenails bleed and fall off.

I would like to think of this as PROUD battle scars, but dang 4 of'em??  My legs are gone (quads) and with these nails gone, well, I guess you can picture how my walks around work were today.  Pretty funny.  I was at one hospital and had to walk down some stairs backwards.  Passed a couple of docs on my way down.  Good times!

I keep my toenails clipped pretty short cuz when they're they get sore and bruised. I gotta assume your shoes aren't too small? Have you tried a half size larger maybe? Possible your feet swell quite a bit after a certain amount of miles.....

I try to keep them pretty short to prevent them from falling off.  Also make sure they aren't rubbing on your socks or anything because that can cause problems too.

Oh yea.  Those babies are turning black before they fall.  The last one did.  This time it's 3 maybe 4.

I've already up'd the shoe size.  That didn't take long.  I was just curious about the cutting short of my nails.
