Overall Rank = 118/194

Age Group Rank = 8/12
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4 am after a restless night. There were several women in the room next to me, laughing and talking until 1am. Ate a small meal, then fell back asleep until 0530. Nice, organized transition and event planning.
Event warmup:

None. There was no swimming allowed before the event.
Swim
  • 40m 36s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

Cool water. My first swim in the new wetsuit. I forgot to bring my body glide, so I was worried about raw areas, but my suit is so awesome, I had absolutely no areas of discomfort. Thank you PROMOTION!
What would you do differently?:

Perhaps try to swim a little harder, but I was practicing my IM pace. I felt like I certainly could have done another 1.2 miles.
Transition 1
  • 04m 30s
Comments:

Why do transitions take so long for me? I could have moved up one or two slots in my division if I figured this out!
What would you do differently?:

Put sunscreen on before doning the wetsuit.
Bike
  • 3h 17m 46s
  • 56 miles
  • 16.99 mile/hr
Comments:

Three loops. The first 9 miles of each loop was with the wind. When I looked down at my speedometer and noticed 25 mph going uphill, I became worried. The returning 9 miles were at 10-15 mph. There were houses and some buildings that blocked some of the wind. By the last 9 miles, my quads were so fatigued, and I was ready to get off the bike. One bathroom break.
What would you do differently?:

Train more outdoors. But this is quite difficult to do in Nebraska prior to May due to the extremely cold weather conditions. However, due to my lack of outdoor training, this was acceptable. If my IM weather conditions mimic this tri......
Transition 2
  • 03m 24s
Comments:

Another slow transition time. I changed my socks, and walked the transition.
Run
  • 2h 18m 36s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

It only took about a mile before I got my "running legs." Initially I went easy, trying to set an 11 min/mile IM pace. When there were only 3 miles left, I looked at my watch and figured that if I upped my pace to an 8:30-9:00 min pace, I could finish with my best HIM time ever! So, I did. The last mile I felt terrible, but persevered.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Walked, packed up my stuff.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Age, gender, genetics, and time. But I am not in this sport for speed. I am in it because I LOVE IT, and I love the people it attracts.

Event comments:

I tried new nutrition for this race. I used only accel gels (one every 30 minutes on the bike, and one every 2 miles on the run), gatorade (4 ounces on the 10, 20, 40, 50 minute marks on the bike), and water (4 ounces with every gel consumed. Total calories= 300/hr. Total fluids= 24 oz/hr on the bike, and 18 oz/hr on the run. I felt like I had enough energy for the entire race except for the last mile of running. Two hours after the race, I had three episodes of diarrhea. Any ideas why?

Nice race! Way to kick it into high gear for the PR too.

No idea on the Accel gels but after one try with them like 2 years ago with similar results I never went back. I use GU and so wish they were still on the IM course Oh well, I'll bring my own.

Hope you got to enjoy a relaxed day after such an awesome race!

Great job on your race.  Congrats on the PR!

Can't help you with the nutrition.  This was my first HIM, and I still have some things to learn there myself.  I can say that I've learned to put on sunscreen very early, usually before I leave the house/hotel.  This gives it time to soak in well before you get to body marking (since markers + sunscreen = smear).

Glad to see another satisfied ProMotion customer.  I got one of their sleeveless suits last have and it has worked great for me, too.  Again, great job!
