I just found out about a triathlon Ironhead is putting on in McKinney next month. Right here in my own home town, I pretty much have to do it.

I've heard about some differences between Ironhead and other promoters. The one I can remember is that you have to wear your race belt with number during the bike. Are there other things I should know about an Ironhead event?

Are you talking about the Tri-Historic McKinney? I was thinking of doing it as well. I don't know anything about Ironhead though - sorry

You'll need to get your bike inspected sometime race week. Check the Ironhead site for the shops that can do it.

Other than that it's the same as any other race. Jack was in the Air Force for a few decades so he can be strict/harsh/mean, but that's what I want in a race director. He's gets stuff done.

Well, uuummm... they always SAY they will inspect the bike but no one has ever inspected mine. I'm not complaining though! Fine by me.

Jack is an acquired taste I suppose... I actually like him and think he's a cool man who runs a tight ship.

Jack is not defintely not the warm and fuzzy type, but I like him. There are rarely misunderstandings on race day.

I know any Richardson Bike Mart can inspect it - basically they just check that brakes and gears are functioning cleanly, and that cranks and headset don't bind or have any play.  They put a little sticker on the handlebars.  I don't mind - the RBM guys will usually tweak the bike a little if they notice anything.  I've even had them strip off and replace a sticking derailleur cable at no charge.  Can't complain about a free micro tune-up.

You will need your race number when you ride the bike. Some races don't make you wear it, Jack does. If you have a race belt, just put it on with the number on your back, then turn it around for the run. No big deal, but when I volunteered at one of his races, people were leaving for the bike with no number on, and they were turned back.
