Subject: OWS Friday 4/27 with local swim coach and IM legend

Dave Young sent me this email earlier today.  I talked to him later and he would like to make this a monthly get together, possibly more often!  As he says in the email, the clinic is free but donations are requested so you should chip in a little just to defray misc. costs.

For those of you who don't know him, Dave is has been very active in the local tri community for several years.  He's completed several Ironmans, won several national and world championship open water competitions, and "has fun" by catching the pros after their head start on the IM swim leg!  Bottom line:  the guy knows swimming and how to coach it.  He's helped me tremendously over the last few months and I encourage everyone to come out on Friday.

What: Free Open Water Mini-Clinic and Open Water Swim

When: Friday, April 27, 2007

Where: Windsurf Bay Park (Lake Ray Hubbard) off of Zion exit on I30 - same location TriDallas conducted Friday night swims the last couple of years. Go East on I30 to Zion Exit - go south - take first left on to Locust Grove Road - follow road until it ends in a parking lot - look for Dave's YELLOW NISSAN XTERRA.  Use this address for GOOGLE SEARCH: 5556 Locust Grove Rd, Garland, TX 75043

Schedule: 5:00 to 5:30 arrival and set up - 5:30 early group swim - informal 15 min clinic/class at 6:00 to 6:15 - later group or 2d swim around 6:20 - out of there by 6:45/7:00. No Host dinner afterwards at the new County Line Barbecue (next to Bass Pro Shop on the lake).

Fee: Free but will have a contribution jar for those who want to help defray some costs

Coach: Dave Young, Masters Swim Coach, USAT Level I coach

Equipment: BRING a WETSUIT! Bring hydration. Swim marker buoys and kayaks for safety on scene.

Future: If this works and we have fun then we will do it again soon and frequently!

I can not make it this Friday. But with a little notice, I can block out my schedule a little early for the next one.

That is awesome.  I worked with Dave a little last year, and he was fantastic.  This looks like a fantastic opportunity.  I wish I there were some way to make it happen, but I just don't think I can get over there on Friday nights.

I would defintely be interested if y'all are going to do this again, though.

Wow!!! So I can just show up!?!

I will definitely try to make it!  I kinda already have plans, but I might be able to do both.  If not this time, I am interested for next time!

Thanks John!

Thanks for the information. This looks really cool!

Dang it for being so far away though. For me to get there from 635/Dallas Tollway... going East through Friday traffic... would be undoable. Ugh.

I hate to pass up a great opportunity but I know this friday I couldn't make it, and I doubt I could make it out there by 5pm on other fridays as well

Sounds great though.

Out of town this weekend but I'll definitely come by if you continue to have them. Only have a scuba wetsuit but I bet I could manage to swim ok in it...

Well, I own both a SUBA wetsuit and a tri wetsuit. You can give it a try in your SCUBA wetsuit... but you will probably end up with fatigued shoulders. SCUBA wetsuits do not have the same kind of flexible neoprene made for swimming the forward crawl/freestyle.

Tri wetsuits are completely different from SCUBA wetsuits. I honestly can't imagine swimming in my SCUBA wetsuit. Then again, I'm a really picky when it comes to swimming and stuff interfering with my stroke.

It's worth a shot... but if you ever think you want to do OWSing that requires a wetsuit (tri or not)... then you might want to look into getting a tri wetsuit.

I'm in negotiation to free that time up. Anyone know how cold the water is? I'd be going sans wetsuit.

Pppsssstttt... Jcbolten and Camy:

I would guess the water is probably around 70 degrees. Seeing how that canal (not as deep) we swam in just 3-4 days ago was 68... I can't imagine the lake is too much warmer.

I guess it's finally time to get a wetsuit then!

I'd be worried it's much colder, actually.  Folks that did the Playtri OWS clinic the week before the races were in 58 degrees at Lake Grapevine!

Update:  Someone on TriDallas.org just posted about this OWS swim.  Said it was 78 at waters edge, so they were guessing ~72 where the swimming would be.

If you want a relatively inexpensive wetsuit, scubatoys as one for about $90. I picked one up right before the play-tri and it was worth every single cent. I got a short suit, but they had full length suits that were about 120 I think. These are tri suits too, not scuba.

Thanks Andy.  That sounds like a great price to me.

As of April 14th, temps at Ray Hubbard were reported as 58-63 degrees.  I would think it is still a bit too chilly to tackle without a wetsuit.

The Angler Guide has updated the temps today:

It's now 64-68 degrees. I'm going to give it a try without wetsuit. If I can't bear it, I'll go for a jog or something.

For those of you that are interested I have posted the link to a thread from the Triathlon Discusion forum that has a 50% discount of xterra wetsuits.

I would love one but can't afford right now.
