I've run on the gravel path thru my local golf course in the dead of winter or super early in the morning like when it's still not light enough to play, but light enough that I don't trip and hurt myself (I don't yet have the guts to run on there when people are actually playing golf). I know a handful of runners in the area that love to train on golf courses...and they run on the actual course, like the greens. We've all used public golf courses. It's pretty fun, and surprisingly hilly (at least the one near me).

That's all I got on golf course running.... Have fun, and keep your head up .

Oh, and if you're looking for alternatives to cement and treadmill, you can also try asphalt (softer than cement) or an outdoor track.

I've played plenty of golf and have never seen any joggers on the fairways

The one thing you want to absolutely avoid is running over the mowed grass on the course itself. I'd recommend going and checking some local public courses out, some of the ones with neighborhoods around them may have jogging trails or dirt cart paths that you could go down. Other than that your best bet would be to find a place that manicured the roadside surrounding the course and run along that.

City parks would probably be a better bet, have you looked for local trails?

I used to love golf course cross country meets in HS. so much fun to tear up the course with the 1" spikes.

Not a great idea unless there are no golfers.
It slows the pace of play having to wait for runners to get out of range.

The maint. crew is not fond of this running on the grass thing either. They might chase you with a rake.

Definately stay on the cart path if you decide to go for a golf course run.

When I was growing up there use to be people who would run around the perimeter of the golf course.  Most of the time, this was out of the way.  It was a private course and the people running were members. (don't know if that factors into the equation)

Alright, I have run on golf courses.  We used to do it on occasion in HS for cross-country practice.  My personal experiences on this:

A) If you're gonna do it, do it when there is no around.  Golfers get p-o'ed at people who don't belong on the course.  Worst case: the cops are called.

B) Stay to the edges.  Don't run on the greens.  We always just ran the perimeter.  If it's not well-maintained, oh well.  You're not on roads, so rough terrain is to be expected.

C) Keep in mind that, depending on the course, you might be trespassing.  I never had an issue with that from a moral standpoint, so I can't help you there.

Generally, it's fun to run on the courses, but can be a pain in the heinie.

You're right...most courses consider it trespassing. My old course cracked down hard in 2005
to where they called the cops on dog walkers when NO golfers were around. It was one of the
reasons I put my clubs down, put on running or cycling shoes and have never looked back.

DISCLAIMER: I am NOT a golfer

I would suggest talking with the Pro Shop to determine if its okay. Trespassing is a crime, and even though its minor its still no way to conduct yourself. Golf courses spend LOTS of time and money grooming their course and they may not appreciate runners. Theres also course marshalls that will catch you and call the cops if they're not cool. There's other places you can find that won't cause you problems. Be creative- just my 2cents

I wouldn't suggest it. For one, most courses will kick you off and you don't want the old ba$tard ranger in the golf cart on you tail.....they take their job way too seriously. Also, it's a liability for you to be out there. You haven't paid the greens fees, therefore if you get hurt, you aren't covered.

As an avid golfer and someone who used to work in the proshops, I have heard many "stories" of non golfers using the course for other things besides playing golf. Golfers do not like you on the course at any time. Do not be surprise if you start hearing "errant" golf shots whizzing by you if you decide to jog out there.

I had looked at running beside bike trails and other places.  This is why I stopped looking else where.  Most all races are run on asphalt or something similar (unless you are doing XTERRA race or off road tri.)  So I figure you train like you race, that way you get no surprises come race time.

I will train at tracks, but only for speedwork where I want to know how fast I am going for a set time.  I have also gone to tracks to train with kids, since I can keep an eye on them while running.

One of my tri books recommends running barefoot once in a while. They recommended a golf course because of the immaculate care on the grounds so you don't have to worry about killing your feet. I haven't had the guts to try it though, keep getting a picture of being run down by club-swinging men in golf carts. It's a shame though because it would be the prefect place for a run.

As a golfer, I'm not big on seeing  runners/walkers on the course.  It doesn't bother so much if they are respectful of the course and the golfers - - meaning - don't run by/walk by/talk aloud when someone is trying to hit.

I would think that, if you were to run the course at first light, you would be ahead of any groups of golfers and have no problem.

Warning - beware of errant shots and some red bikes that may aim for you!

I've run on golf courses for a long time and have never had a problem. I only do it when there are no golfers on the course and only on the cart path.
If you get out by 6:00 am you will be ahead of most of the golfers on the course. You will see plenty of maintanence guys out and I just give them a friendly wave.

From a safety perspective, don't run when there are golfers on the course. Dont even think about it then. Having been hit by an errant golfshot, I can assure you its not something you want to experience.

If/When you do run on the course, do not run on the greens. Fairways or anywhere else is fine. The foot impact of running on greens will damage them. They are very expensive to build/maintain, especially at better courses.

I'm not going into the tresspassing issue. Thats for you to decide.

Good luck finding a soft place to run. Your body will thank you for it when you do.
