St. Anthony's Triathlon
69F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 43m 21s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = M- 40-44
Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at4:45 after a decent sleep devoid of any serious coughing and took a hit of albuterol for my congested lungs along with 3 Tylenol Cold (breakfast of Champions).

Walked to T and set up the stuff. Walked back to hotel and changed.
Event warmup:

A nice walk to the swim start.
Swim
  • 29m 30s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 48s / 100 yards
Comments:

Besides the usual getting kicked around, an overall pleaseant experience.
What would you do differently?:

Be more aggressive from the start. Almost swam at a pace as if it were a Half Iron distance swim.
Transition 1
  • 02m 11s
Comments:

Any time a transition has 4,000 racers, things don't go as well as they should.
What would you do differently?:

No GLOVES
Bike
  • 1h 11m 33s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.84 mile/hr
What would you do differently?:

Leave the gloves home.
Transition 2
  • 02m 36s
Comments:

The dude next to me screwed up my transition and moveed all my shit around. I spent too much time re-organizing my stuff.
What would you do differently?:

Duct tape the dudes bike to the rack.
Run
  • 57m 32s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

Hard run but that's why Whimps don't do this. At mile 4, I looked at my watch and I thought I would cross the finish line sub 2h 40m. To do this I knew I was going to have to run some in some serious heat at an 8m/mile pace.

No dice.... I tried as hard as I could. I was having a terrible time filling my lungs with air because of my cold. A NASTY coughing attack at mile 4.75 which caused me to literally stop for 20 seconds ruined my chances at sub 2:40, I guess was a reminder to slow down.

What would you do differently?:

Nothing- except have my fuel belt bottles on the belt in the cooler rather than making it a 2 step process.
Post race
Warm down:

Sat in a chair with wet towels on my head and chilled. Coughed for about 15 minutes and drank some water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

A BRUTAL chest cold. that started on Wednesday on Monday of the week.

Event comments:

This is Florida's race. As the second largest race in the USA, it kicks off the season and is a force in the racing community.

Congratulations on not only getting to the starting (feeling as sick as you were) but also putting in great splits.

I wish I could average nearly 21MPH nice and healthy; can't even dream of doing so with a cold like you did!

Great race; we must've been within a few seconds of each other finishing.  Not sure if we met Saturday night, if so, excuse me for my lousy memory and it was good to meet you!  If not, maybe next time!
