Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30 loaded the car and drove to the race site.
Event warmup:

Set up Transition and walked around a little bit.
Swim
  • 28m 8s
  • 656 yards
  • 04m 16s / 100 yards
Comments:

Got into the water about 10 minutes prior to the start and felt fine. As soon as the gun went off to start, my open water freak out happened agian. I couldn't get my breathing down at all and for some reason was scared. I have put a lot of time in the pool and know that I can swim, but for some reason when I get into OWS I freak out and loose all my confidence. Very disappointed in the swim leg.
What would you do differently?:

Practice OWS a lot more and hopefully not freak out in the open water.
Transition 1
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

T-1 was good, very pleased with the time, was a little disoriented out of the water and very upset with my performance but was able to get a good transition and get onto the bike. Had a good spoke just steps away form the bike exit.
What would you do differently?:

I was pretty happy with the T-1.
Bike
  • 38m 16s
  • 11.2 miles
  • 17.56 mile/hr
Comments:

Started to feel really good on the bike after my swim. Decided to push it a little more on the bike to make up some time. Started to pass some people and was able to climb hills well.
Transition 2
  • 01m 47s
Comments:

Came into T-2 and noticed someone racked their bike in my spot and over my run stuff. Had to squeeze my bike in and manuver around my bike to get to run shoes. Overall a good T-2
What would you do differently?:

Take in some Gel or fluid during.
Run
  • 24m 35s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt good on the run, thought I was going about 10/mile but finished strong. Walked the water station and got in some fluid.
What would you do differently?:

Very pleased with the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked to Transition and got my stuff together and then went to the finish line to wait for a friend to finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Open Water Swim- really need to figure out why I am so freaked out in the open water.

Event comments:

Enjoyed this race, first one in this series and first sprint i ever did. My goal was 1:30, which I was off of by 4 minutes, not to upset about that since I did horrible in the water. Very pleased with my Bike and running. Just Open water swim was horrible.

Good job on the race! I totally understand the OW freak-out syndrome, I have a small freak out everytime I get in open water to swim. I think with more practice you'll get more comfortable and next time you'll be smokin' the swim along with the bike and run!

Wow - way to battle back from the swim.  I think everyone experiences the freak out - it's just a matter of practice.  Congrats on a great race nonetheless!

Way to finish strong. Really nice bike and run splits after working through the swim. You're a stellar swimmer.  It'll just take some time in the open water to get comfortable.  You've got the skills, just need to get the 'feeling' down.
