St. Anthony's Triathlon
Sunny
Total Time = 3h 23m 10s
Overall Rank = 2902/4000
Age Group = Athena 40-49
Age Group Rank = 16/27
Pre-race routine:

couldn't sleep- the AC went off for about two hours. I woke up sweaty and hot. Couldn't just strip the jammies off bc the kids were in the bed next to us...so rummaged aroundlooking for a shirt and shorts. It came back on soon after but I kept waking up. Then 5am comes and I just want to crawl back to sleep....
Event warmup:

lots of walking, getting into a wetsuit is a warmup in itself. Got wet, stretched, hung out with a band of BTers.
Swim
  • 32m 41s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 59s / 100 yards
Comments:

lined up for the swim. We had a smaller group than last year (I raced AG last year). It was the Funder 25 and all Athenas. I must of lucked out... I started back and left, next to KathyG and Ovetta. I got a good rhythm going, got off course to the left a little but not much. No waves, no crowd, but I did hit someone once and kept going. Rounded the buoys with no problem, caught a few drafts and swam over some leftover Clydes from teh previous wave. Got pulled out of water onto steps by some big strong dudes. Nice.
What would you do differently?:

swim a bit faster. I was plenty comfortable. This was my best St A's swim all around.
Last year's swim: 34:45
Transition 1
  • 02m 6s
Comments:

came out of water, running to my bike, they rearranged the T area this year so everyone pretty much ran straight out instead of out, over, over again, and out. I think it was much better. I was amazed a LOT of bikes were still there. I had to sit down and remove damn wetsuit. Got everything else on no problem, and ran out with my bike, yay me, I usually have to walk!
What would you do differently?:

have a stripper?

Bike
  • 1h 26m 7s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 17.31 mile/hr
Comments:

I need to work on the bike. I'm tired of getting passed by a gazillion people. KathyG and Sue passed me just like I knew they would :) Fast Biker Chicks. The first long way out was hard, I swear it was a fake incline, I was pushing 13 then. The other long stretches were fast, hit 23, 24. But some times I could barely keep up 16 I don't know why.
What would you do differently?:

Learn cornering better. I had a gel flask, but I didn't get enough. I should of used it all up- 2 servings. Used all of water and gatorade and half a bottle they gave out on the course. Learn a rolling dismount.
Last year's bike: 1:28:45.
Transition 2
  • 02m 47s
Comments:

a bit slow. I didn't get my feetsies out, haven't practiced that this year. So ran funky till I hit the soft grass. I liked the flags they had near the dismount- got your attention all right! Ran to rack, lots of bikes back :( shoes off, socks off, socks on, shoes on, swig of the gel again, grab two gels, grab hat and while running I stuck the gels in my boobies and put on the hat and belt. I usually have to walk this, but with everyone looking at ya, ya gotta run!
What would you do differently?:

practice getting feet outta shoes on bike.
Run
  • 1h 18m 56s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 12m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

HOT. ugh. I was tired. Cramped a little. I need to learn NOT TO GET SCARED of getting out of breath. I think that is my biggest thing. I walked and partook of every water station even that I knew the cups were being reused. Saw Betsy pass me, some folks from the tri club passed me, Jen passed me, I saw Janice and blew her some kisses, saw Wendi but she was in a zone(?). Ran with Adam for a while. Saw a friend I haven't seen for a while. She's usually a fast (8:00) runner but was really struggling. Every freakin'body passed me. sheesh. A fat chick was going faster than me, with a C on her calf, so I"m like no way and played cat and mouse before I finally won and tried it again with another fatter chick with a C on her calf. Why can't I run faster??? I mean, 12 minute miles, come on...
What would you do differently?:

new legs. new lungs?
Last year's run: 75:04
Post race
Warm down:

near the end, someone sprinted in front of me. I realized it was Jessica! Hugged her at the end. Got ice cold towels. ahhh! Then Jessica did something really crazy- ya know those huge garbage cans with ice and drinks at the finish? She dunked her head in it!! whoa! Walked around... got food....

What limited your ability to perform faster:

running.

Event comments:

Everything was great about this weekend. Dinner, drinks, etc, etc. Always fun to hang out with the Band of BTers.

Once again, great to see you, and to meet Tom & crew.  You had a good race, and I am glad I didn't have to run an hour or two later with you ladies.

Christine,

It was great to race with you and start the race with you and as I knew you'd drop me fast on the swim.

I was excited to see you as we entered the Golf Course area...I wanted to vent about the stupid penalty but save that for a later day.

Nice way at being faster on the swim/bike. It was hot and nasty out there on the run...everyone suffered.

Your husband and kids are great..you are a lucky Mom!

I hope working out with the new tri team works for you as I think it will be a great way to learn and connect with other triathletes to train with.

You rocked it Christine....fun weekend...congrats on a excellent race!

Jess left out the "I dunked my head in a garbage can" part when she told me about the race!  Way to go in PR-ing the swim and bike!  Running is always the toughest part.  At least you know you left it all out there...nice job!  Next year will be -kickin' time!!

ROFL!  You're hilarious.

Way to go Christine.  Great job onthe run and not letting the chick with a C on her calf pass you!  You sure did knock out some serious time from the swim and bike compared to last year!  That's awesome.  I was slower on the run too this year.  Weird.

It was great seeing you and the family once again!

Great race, Christine!  I know you want to run faster, but give it time.  You had a good run...you held a good pace and that is VERY hard to do!   Nice and even mile splits!
