St. Anthony's Triathlon
Sunny
Total Time = 3h 15m 28s
Overall Rank = 2720/
Age Group = Novice
Age Group Rank = 43/59
Pre-race routine:

stayed in bed as late a possible, grabbed a bannana and apple and rushed to the transisition area. Probably drank way to much fluid either the night before or that morning. I took my antibiotic that said drink plenty of water when you take it. Put lots of sunscreen lotion on because antibiotic said limit sun exposure.
Event warmup:

I did not really warm up unless you count the walk from the Transition area to the start. I think that counts. :)
Swim
  • 30m 3s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

I got in the back of the pack and off to the side and started very slow so that I did not need to be pulled out of the water before the end of the swim. My wetsuit or team jersey started REALLY chaffing about half way through. I felt very good about my tracking the bouys although they were only 100m apart. All my hard work swimming and a wetsuit paid off. I NEVER expected to swim that fast considering where I was when I started last year.
What would you do differently?:

I may go a little faster as I get more comfortable in the water. I never got tired. My main fear, other than drowning of course, is being away from shore in deep, dark water and hyperventilating from swimming too hard.
Transition 1
  • 04m 39s
Comments:

I had spray on sunscreen for the t1 because of the anitbiotics. I REEEEALLY stung when I sparayed it on my chaffed under arms. WOW! That woke me up!
What would you do differently?:

Run in, move faster, run out
Bike
  • 1h 21m 4s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.39 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt way too comfortable on the bike. I was averaging in the high 19 mphs, but decided to slow down because my HR was at 160 although I felt really good. I was afraid that I would not be able to run if I went too fast.
What would you do differently?:

I would push harder on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 03m 45s
Comments:

I do not know why this transition was so slow. I must have taken a short nap.
What would you do differently?:

I do not know. I must have been napping.
Run
  • 1h 15m 59s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 12m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

I did not expect to run fast. My goal was to not walk except at water stations. I took a porta potty break behind two women which was a little over 4 minutes. This was only the second time that I have run 6 miles in the last 15 years.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I would check the course out. If I had I would have known that there were more porta potties along the way and I would not have waited in line. I did not really get to train for the run because I needed to concentrate on swimming after missing so much time with my collarbone. Not drowning is more important to me than running fast. ;)
Post race
Warm down:

walked around a bit.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training of course...however I did take three months off with my broken collarbone and did not really start back until March 8th so I needed to concentrate on swimming.

Event comments:

I had a great time hanging out with everyone and checking out St. Petersburg. I wish that I could have stayed longer.

Ha - a nap in T2   Great report, Neal.  And look at your swim time!!  That's really awesome that you were able to do it after the collarbone mishap.  Good luck this season.

You did a great job - your splits are great! It's so hard to predict how many portapotties will be on the course - last year there was only one and it nearly killed me, so you made the right decision to wait a bit.

Great job, neal!  I'm glad you had a fabulous swim/ bike even after the setback you had with your collar bone.  Well done.

Great job Neal. I was so happy to hear/see how well you did in the swim. I can't believe you were down for the count with the collarbone such a short time ago! It was great to see you on the run course too... I'm not sure if it boosted you at all, but I enjoyed seeing someone I recognized!
