I hear there is a steep hill coming out of T1 on the BLST course. How far from the bike mounting line does the hill begin? Is there sufficient distance from the bike mount line to the hill to permit stepping into and strapping your bike shoes if thay are already attached to the pedals or are you best advised to just put your shoes on in the transition area? Do alot of people run a 12-27 cassette or are most people okay running an 11-23?

There is a slight downhill out from the bike mount line then a left turn and up the hill you go.  It's about 100 yards or so.  I think there is room to get into your bike shoes before the uphill begins.

I use a 12x27 for BSLT.

Do a forum search on BSLT.  There are several other threads discussing the various nuanaces of the BSLT course.

You have time as long as you don't mess around. I don't remember there being any downhill before that first climb.

It's short, but it's there. I remember coasting downhill briefly out of T1 while looking up at the first hill and thinking "This is going to suck".

When I got to the top I was relieved though. It wasn't just the first hill of the course, it was my first hill... ever. I'm making some frequent road trips over the next few weeks to get some hill work. Between that and the Computrainer I'm hoping for a much better bike split this year.

Be sure you rack your bike in an easy gear so you aren't having to shift and get into your shoes (good advice I got from BTers last year, recycled for 2007). That hill comes up pretty quick.

Everytime I start to think about the bike section of BSLT, I get a mini panic attack...

The transition is in the parking lot and the parking lot slopes down toward the road.  I remember coasting down to the road, left turn and then uphill.
