You could do some weight training for arms/shoulders/upper back to inprove your strength (re: speed) in the water. Pullups, shoulder presses, etc. Is there a school nearby with a pool? Sometimes they'll have an open swim on weekends that you can get into.

You could also purchase some resistance bands to work on technique. I believe trisports.com has these available.

Hi Figue,

I use an AirDyne Exercise bike that has both levers for the arms and a bike crank.  I can get cardio exercise for my arms and shoulders by using just the arm levers.  There are pegs to rest my feet on while doing arms only.  If you can find this type of exercise machine you could get a pretty good (though not as good as swimming) workout.

Flat-water kayaking (if it's close to where you live/work)...and the weather permits it

If you have access to a small pool a set of stretch cords from Kiefer would do the trick. It gets pretty boring swimming while tethered in place, but it's better than not swimming at all. Our pool on the base closes quite often so on occasion I've had to retreat to the backyard pool with the cords. Good luck, I hope this helps.
