Total Time = 00m
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 152/161
Pre-race routine:

Set up transition, Jeff pumped up the tires and took the walk to Spa beach. Stood and watched Jeff get all ready and do a little pre-race swim. While I was watching all the swimmers get ready I did a little bit of a freak out. Wasn't sure I was going to go off. Found Mike (GatorLA) waiting with his age group and stood and talked to him for a bit. Found Wendi and wonder twin came through for me. She settled me down and got me in the water to swim a bit. After I realized how calm the water was I knew I could do it. Of course as we were getting out of the water they pulled in the first swimmer which brought me right back to not sure if I was going.
Swim
  • 40m 5s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

First open water swim. Had some problems with sighting. I know I swam at least @ 200 yards more than I needed too.
What would you do differently?:

I would go a little harder. I think I was a bit too conservative.
Transition 1
  • 03m 27s
Comments:

I think my wet suit is too big. It is entirely too easy to get on and off.
What would you do differently?:

I need to get on my bike a bit faster.
Bike
  • 1h 43m 24s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 14.42 mile/hr
Comments:

I knew going into this that my bike was going to hurt. I haven't spent enough time on the bike outside to feel good. I need to work on staying in aero more and getting my cadence up. Plus I had to pee and couldn't manage to on my bike.
What would you do differently?:

Try and drink more!
Transition 2
  • 03m 46s
Comments:

I had to pee pretty much the entire bike. However I did not want to stop and pee. So I figured out that during my T2 I would have to sit down to put my shoes on. So while I was sitting on the ground I decided to pee too. Finished up threw so water on myself and got up and ran.
What would you do differently?:

Working on getting me bike stuff off easier.
Run
  • 1h 29m 3s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 14m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

This is the part I had worked on the most. Knowing that this is the part I am not that good at and don't like the most I worked hard for this.
I hooked up with a TNT'er who stayed with me and we did a run walk together for about three miles. Kind of got me through mile 2 through 5. Just someone to keep pace with me and really kept me going forward. Somewhere around mile five I realized if I pushed it I could make it under 4 hours. It was close but with Jeff finding me about mile 5 and a half and running with me I really wanted to do it. So at mile 6 I picked up the pace a little bit. I made it with 17 seconds to spare!
What would you do differently?:

I need to drink more during the race. Somewhere on the bike I would take a mouthful of water and half would come out. I just couldn't seem to drink it.
Post race
Warm down:

I remember crossing the finish line and seeng Jeff. I also remember Jeff(Gainsville) grabbing me arm and being excited. After that it got a little hazy. We walked over to the BT meeting spot and I sat down. After that my head was just really hazy and I felt funny. Jeff made me go to the Med. tent and ran into Mike looking for Wendi. Ended up dehydrated and a bit of sun stroke. Ice cold blanket and than warming blankets. Had 2 big bottles of Gatorade and couldn't get warm. After a couple of hours in the tent they let me go. With the warning to stay in the air conditioning and drink plenty of fluids...but no alcohol!!!! I was waiting for the after race drink too.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My liquid intake!!! and the heat of course.

Event comments:

Hopefully I can do better next Olympic!!!

You're awesome!

Great race....especially for your first Oly, and your first open water wetsuit swim. You handled it great. I'm so incredibly proud of you and your accomplishment. Its got to be such a huge mental boost knowing that you've knocked out an Olympic. Way to go sweetie.

This was the best of the 3 years down here at St. A's with you. Can't wait to race WITH you again.

Yay for no MONO this year! Glad I got to see you before the swim start. You didn't look nervous at all!

So, you up for this race again next year?? Just make sure you get a wetsuit that fits.

Easy to get on and off?  That doesn't seem all that out of the ordinary, especially if Jeff was helping you shop.

Congratulations on your first oly, getting through a tough ows, and PR'ing (of course) under 4 Hours!!!  You absolutely killed it.  I hope it whetted your appetite for the next race....

And as always, it was good times hanging with you, Jeff, and Rob Maldonado's your stuff.

Great race Denise.  Way to push yourself in to make it under 4hrs.  And you are a disgusting little girl, peeing on yourself in T2. (shaking my head).  I was excited for you, then you gave me that half cocked look out of you eye that said "If you don't stop yelling I will tear your freaking head off and step on it."

Congratulations on your first Oly!  I'm happy that you pushed it up at the end.  That is SO motivating.

Next year you MUST drink more on the bike so you can go out drinking after the race.

And this is the SECOND RR I have read that someone peed on the grass in T2...
