Pre-race routine:

During weeks prior, working on nutrition/hydration and all aspects of the race. Am not loving my new 2XU Comp1 wetsuit - will borrow spring suit too. Checked out some swimming videos and tried some new techniques. Bicep tendon, shoulder and neck are tweaked - need local sports-oriented chiropractor.
Event warmup:

Arrived at 530, set up, jogged a little and tested bike exit and adjusted gears.
Swim
  • 11m 5s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 02s / 100 yards
Comments:

fresh water was great. Not much clobbering at the start. Had trouble sighting and realized I was wasting time and energy looking. Better stroke, but ended up with the breaststroke.
What would you do differently?:

Sight less often (hey, I'm not gonna' swim past the bouy!) breathe every 2 strokes so that I can get ahead or out of the pack,
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

T1 time in bike time. Tried preclipping my shoes onto bike, but didn't secure with rubber bands. Couldn't get r foot into shoe and had to stop on the course.
What would you do differently?:

Try to secure pedals with rubber bands or just not do this again. Could have run with shoes on more easily I think.
Bike
  • 50m 54s
  • 14 miles
  • 16.50 mile/hr
Comments:

Tried some diff cadence/pedaling stuff - kept higher cadence (faster pedaling) even tho I wasn't sure I was in a high enough gear. Biked without sox for the first time and that was fine.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Time in run. Tongue of my shoe got smushed - had to take off and put back on.
Run
  • 24m 36s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 12s  min/mile
Comments:

felt very stiff all over after the bike and couldn't get into a good swing or stride out. My neck was tweaked before the race, but this tightness was all over and felt more a result from bike posture... An age grouper passed me at the last 1/2 mile and I couldn't catch her. I gave up mentally as well as physically and I was very disappointed in that.
What would you do differently?:

Find a good sports-oriented chiropractor in my area and get a professional bike fitting. Work on speed workouts focus on mental strength.
Post race
Warm down:

shopped the vendors :) had a massage and cleared out of transition. My hamstrings were a bit sore.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

bike fit I think. Lack of swim training

Event comments:

Flat course would make this a good choice for first international distance next year. Soft sand finish is not my favorite and there was a loose sand spot right in the chute where I saw several people stumble.

Good AG finish despite the fatigue factor. Sounds like you're well on your way to finding your groove. hope the neck and shoulders get ironed out.

I was registered for the Olympic course. Had to withdraw, unfortunately, to make a meeting on the east coast the following day. I could see Palm Desert from the plane and imagined being out on the course while making my selection from the beverage cart.
