Subject: Best Half IM for 2005?
I'm beggining to make plans for next summer's races and I've set a goal to complete a half IM. I'm less worried about traveling to the race than I am about finding a good quality event and one that's hosted on a relatively flat course. Oh, and I would like for it to be in the spring or fall when its a little cooler. Lipstick in the goodie bag is optional.

Any recommendations?

Ralph's Half IM is an Mdot race and in SD. In March next year. (a little early) The swim is one loop in Oceanside harbor. The bike is flat for the first 30 miles then a 10 mile climb and then 16 miles down and flat with some headwinds. The run is flat as a pancake. The race is extremely well done and I would recommend it to anyone that wants to do a half. It sells out so you have to decide by Dec or so.

So the whole riding uphill a lot thing's not gonna' work out for you? Just kidding Actually, I was in Ontario last weekend and ran into a bunch of people that were heading up to Ottawa for a half IM. Man, half IM - that's a cool goal. Someday I might join you maniacs. For now, I'll just be a baby maniac

If you are willing to come to Mid-Atlantic region the following races meet your requirements:

Eagleman on June 12, 2005 is a very well run race on a very flat course. Swim is in the Choptank river, bike and run are very flat. Note that sign-up for this race is very soon, and it will fill up rapidly.

Delaware Diamondman is a late season race in Bear DE at Lums Pond State park with a very flat course and a nice lake swim.

I'm not doing it this year, but the TexasMan in the Dallas area has received a lot of national recognition, It is supposed to be very big and have all the bells and whistles - and it's relatively flat.  Tigerphil will be doing it on Sunday and I'm sure he would be glad to "phil" you in.  I am doing another Half IM, also in Texas but about 300 miles to the south called the TallTexan on Sunday and I will let you know what I think about the event next week.

If you aren't adverse to going to way upstate NY, I've hear the Tin Man Half in Tupper Lake has have some good reviews. I've been over the roads before up that way and it's probably not as flat as you woudl like. I'm making that one my goal for next year. I believe the race is at the end of June, but you shouldn't have to worry about warm weather in the northern adirondaks that time of year

go to Florida for the Great Floridian or the disney one. I have heard great things about both, plus the swim is not in the ocean...

florida of course. you're close. the Great Floridian has some climbs and it's held in october. the Florida Half in disney looks pretty cool, in may i believe. and of course the Gulf Coast triathlon in panama city. flat flat flat. same bike course as the im i believe. it's a gulf swim and it can get pretty hot on the run, so that may not be to your liking, but i understand it is a great race for the first timer, half im first timer that is. i'm considering it.

You can look for a full report of my weekend in Dallas for the TexasMan.  I did the same course for an Olympic-length race, and I can tell you that the swim is a triangle in a typically warm Texas lake, the bike is on a gentle incline that you go up and down four times and the run is across a dam so it is as flat as a tortilla with peanut butter on it.  Mmmmm, Peanut Butter...

And the high is supposed to be only 92F on Sunday.  Yippee.

Yep, I hear the 1/2 in FL is flat.  I'm doing one in Arizona in October - I'll let you know how the course is.

Skip the 1/2 in Colorado (the 5430) - big hills plus elevation to deal with

By the way, I've settled on 3 half IM's for next summer

May 7 - Gulf Coast Triathlon, Panama City, FL
June 12 - Ga Rock-n-Roll Half IM, Macon, GA
Oct 22 - Great Floridian Triathlon, Clermont, FL

Between June and Oct, I hope to run a few Oly's or sprints.

Thanks for all the great advice and tips.

Hopefully I'll see you on, Oct 22 - Great Floridian Triathlon, Clermont, FL. My wife and I have set that 1/2 IM as our end goal (A race) for next year. We've been looking at doing a bunch of Sprints and Olympics for the 2005 season and end with that race.

I hope I see you there.
