Age Group Rank = 28/117
Pre-race routine:

Race day regsiter so got there a little early.
Event warmup:

Some light running around. Watched Xan and the 5k race go off. It got dramatically warmer between the 5k and 10k.
Run
  • 51m 11s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

I was running 7:45 minute clips for the first 2.5 miles and then just hit a mini-wall. Tough time going up hill on San Vicente.
What would you do differently?:

I could have done an 8 minute clip the whole way (I think!). Might have gone out a bit too hard.
Post race
Warm down:

Got some food and had to walk about 2 miles to my car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

A bunch of reasons.

1) Haven't done any speed training in months
2) Focused on endurance
3) Shoes are a little old
4) It was much warmer and windier than I anticipated
5) Vegan diet is leaving me tired. Maybe need vitamins.
6) Not as motivated to run fast as previous runs
7) No core or strength training
8) Yada, yada, yada

All excuses. Still happy I did it and it isn't a big deal that I went 3 minutes slower on the exact same race route as 5 months ago (right?!)

Event comments:

Any race I do I am pleased. I decided to do this race when I got up in the morning.

I didn't have the results I wanted but you sometimes learn more from 'failure' than 'victory'.

My running has mostly consisted of going out at a fairly slower pace and just getting miles in. I used to mix fartlek and tempo runs in but I have gotten a bit lazy incorporating that into my program. Will need to do that as I build towards the NY Marathon.

Warm enough for you? Yeesh. That wasn't the cool, overcast beach morning I was hoping for.

Three minutes isn't a big deal, especially considering the schedule you've been keeping. Not only racing at big distance, but traveling for work, etc.

Take some pressure off yourself and just enjoy the next few weks without thoughts of goals, times, etc. The build up to the NYC Marathon will be plenty challenging. You want to be refreshed and energized heading into that, rather than beat up mentally and physically from early season ups and downs.

Glad you tracked me down at the start.

Great job out there Mark

I really love this course and ran my 10k PR there last October at the 10,000. That charge down Vicente is perfect for building up a lot of speed without been too scary. The problem is that you have to pay for it by running up the hill first

Sorry to hear the weather did not cooperate and if it was even half as hot as the Central Coast, it was definitely a tough day.

Hey, Clipping 3 minutes off of your 10k time sounds huge to me. Sounds like you riding a nice improvement curve at this distance.

Take Care

Looks like you had a good race all 8 things considers!

It's tough to do the distance stuff and still get in some kind of speedwork.

Have a great week Mark!!
