Total Time = 1h 19m 1s
Overall Rank = 91/600
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 12/38
Pre-race routine:

About like usual.
Event warmup:

I did swim a bit to get used to the fairly cold water
Swim
  • 15m 25s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

I bumped into one guy a whole lot at the start. I think he was not swimming too straight.
What would you do differently?:

Swim faster
Transition 1
  • 01m 38s
Comments:

I had a pretty bad position in the TA, far from the bike exit. I really have trouble starting with my shoes on the pedals on this course (uphill start out of TA)
Bike
  • 36m 3s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 20.69 mile/hr
Comments:

Pretty good bike ride, I got jammed by a pack of about 3-4 guys who were riding a quasi-paceline. It was quite discouragng to get away from them for a minute or so, only to have them work together to pull me back in.
What would you do differently?:

More work on the top end of my speed range.
Transition 2
  • 01m 10s
What would you do differently?:

I need to work on going without socks for these short races.
Run
  • 24m 37s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

I lost two minutes here to my time from last year.
What would you do differently?:

I need to do more short bricks and more speed work.
Post race
Event comments:

Virginia Amateur sports really seems to be doing better on their organization. As always, when Set-up Inc. is involved, things go smoothly.

Great race - don't worry about the added run time. It was the consencus from talking to everyone there that the run was a little short last year. Everyone (and I mean every single person) I spoke with said they had a big PR for the run last year that was not matched anywhere else! Whoops!

That's true, my run last year was only about a minute and a half off from my stand-alone 5K PR. I was willing to credit it to the downhill finish, maybe they re-measured this year.

Great race! What a great ride, I only wish I could ride that fast.

I enjoyed this race as well and thought it was very well organized and that things went smoothly. I didn't do the race last year, but last year's results point to a short run course, because this year's fastest run split was a good minute slower than last year.

Other than the water being a tad cold and the deep water start, this was a great event.
