Subject: Confused Rugby Player
Afternoon/ Morning depending on your place on the map.

i'm Ben, a 24 year old college student from the Blyth, Northumberland in the Uk. I've played rugby for as long as i can remember but i've always had a dirty little secret. Yes the want to give triathlons a whirl! Growing up my dad was a very competive triathlon and road cyclist for the army for most of my growing up.

I on the other hand turned out to be pretty good at rugby and found that people seemed to think a 6'5" and 225lb teenager didn't make an ideal runner, swim or cyclist. i've always been strong minded (or is that stupid) last october i dislocated my knee badly and then followed up by getting hit by a car. Anyone has any rugby friends realise just because the excise stops it doesn't meant the amount of food changes. so over the last 6 months i've piled on the pounds, so this year my aim is to pretty much set this summer aside to give it a try and see what happens.

so if there are any other oversized people with tips and hints to share feel free to email or message me. i'm pretty much putting all my faith in the training and racing method of brute force and ignorance, all help will be welcome!

Welcome! No great advcie other then chose a good training plan - there are plenty here at BT -and control you food intake. Yes hard to do, but if you can manage the food intake the weight will melt off with your training plan. Enjoy training and remember TRI's are meant to be fun.

FWIW - I saw plenty of "larger" men & women last Saturday during my first tri - and kicking butt! Anyone can do it if they put their mind to it.

Welcome aboard!

Reading your intro sounds exactly like mine. I'm an ex-rugby player as well that put on the weight after being injured.

You can do this. I'm 6'3" and 230lbs so there are plenty of room for us big buys out on the course. It might take us a little longer to finish or the earth might tremble when we run, but we have just as much drive and determination out there.

All I can tell you is to keep at it and have fun. I started off by training for a marathon, and eventually I went over to the triathlon world. A few years later, I'm training for my first Ironman.

All I can tell you is that the tri community is one of the most supportive group of individuals you will ever meet. The community reminds me very much of the rugby community, and triathletes love their beer as well.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

Should we tell him now that he has to shave his legs or wait until later to trick him into that?

Hi Ben,

I came here as a confused hockey player....I'm not built for anything endurance related at all....but I could do ok w/quick sprints on the ice...or just stand in front of the net and block the goalie's view (i'm real good at that! lol)  I started playing less and less mainly because of school work, rather than injury, but same idea.  I was still playing some but not enough to stay in shape.  So I came here, deciding I wanted to be a runner...and eventually a triathlete.

My only advice for you is to take the running thing slowly.  I'm also extremely "strong minded" (read stubborn to the point of stupidity) and tried to do too many miles too fast and ended up with killer shin splints.  Give your body time to adjust and get used to running....even if you feel like mentally you could do more, listen to your body.

Anyway....good luck and welcome!  This is a great place with lots of great ppl to help ya out along the way.  I've been here and working hard since Feb. and have been amazed at the changes I've seen in myself!

I found tri's while exploring sport/excersize options to help stay in shape after injury and other circumstances almost stopped me from playing team sports, and weight room routines added strength but didn't really help fitness.

I'm 6'5" tall and started training at 280lbs.  I'm down to 242 now, 1.5 years later.

My only suggestion is to start slow and easy.  Especially with your knee issues.  There's no reason you can't do this, but there is also no reason to push too hard and hurt yourself either.

I'm a former rugby player, too.  Don't let people discourage you.  You'll be able to do this.

Former Rugby Player from Ireland. I broke my knee in two about 5 years ago and was told id never run again. I went back and played rugby for 2 more years, i have completed a marathon and only last week I just completed my first olympic tri.

I too lashed on the pounds after plying after about 6 months of slagging i got my fat butt up and running. I went from 200ibs to 173lbs.

Its not easy and you cant drag a hourse to water. If you want to do it you will.

Goo luck with everything.
