Overcast
Total Time = 6h 34m
Overall Rank = 453/527men
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 48/57
Pre-race routine:

Drove from Raleigh. Left at 3am. Ate PB bagel and Ensure at 4am. Sips of gatorade and water until start time. Got there early (as usual) to set-up. Headed to the water around 6:40...water was 71°, so I wanted to get acclimated. Next year I'm renting a cabin!
Event warmup:

100 yard swim to fill wetsuit and get my face in the "cold" water.
Swim
  • 44m
  • 1931 meters
  • 02m 17s / 100 meters
Comments:

Good swim. Crystal clear water - did not need to sight very often, I just looked to the side to see other swimmers. Got off track a bit (I tend to pull to the left)...but not much. Rounding the bouys - I could keep my head in the water and see the cinder block and rope.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I wish I was faster...but that tends to be a theme today.
Transition 1
  • 02m 44s
Comments:

No probs...new wetsuit came off ok. I tripped up a bit trying to run and jump on my bike, but I avoided total embarrasment and kept it together.
What would you do differently?:

Slow down.
Bike
  • 3h 19m 20s
  • 56 miles
  • 16.86 mile/hr
Comments:

Man, this bike lasted forever. I thought I was going to do well having trained almost exclusively on hills near my house and this race was flat. I was dissapointed to see my results...last in my age group on the bike! Hmmm? My shoulder started to sting at mile 45, stood up a few times to stretch a bit. Stopped to pee twice...that cost me 2 minutes maybe.
What would you do differently?:

Bike more? I don't know, this one surprised me.
Transition 2
  • 03m 14s
Comments:

Nothing special...stopped at the porta-john right before the start of the run.
Run
  • 2h 25m 23s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 06s  min/mile
Comments:

Great run until mile 10. I had to start walking because I got a bit of nausea and did not want to puke...so I alternated walk/run fot the last three.
What would you do differently?:

Dunno.
Post race
Warm down:

Stood waist deep in the lake and watched my son play. Chatted with my wife. Also talked some with Bostic, TrinNC and JenneUNC.

Event comments:

Wow. This was my first HIM...I am a bit dissapointed in my time and inability to run the entire half marathon, but taking a step back from the whole thing, I am very proud to have competed and finished. I beat 9 people in my age group! I think they all burned up their legs on the bike and I got by them on the run. Thanks to Bostic, TriNC , JenneUNC, 1Foot and all the others that were part of my day...oh, and especially SPot for the great encouragement out on the course all day! I think we are lucky to have Set-up in our area...all of their races are well done...except for the darn beans and rice...gimme somethin' else to eat!

that is a great first half.  Our swims and runs sound awfully similar (except your faster on the swim)  It was about mile 10 when my run went to pot.

this is a great foundation to start with. Now, on to Duke !

Yep, somewhere around that point in the run was rough for me, too. Good job, and nice write up. Now that you've got the first HIM under your belt, you've got a better idea about the next! (At least, that's what I'm telling myself...)

Congrats on your first HIM!!!

Long race and you did great...training on hills and riding on flats feels strange..I had that going from MA to FL.

Maybe learn to pee on the bike to save time.

Great job!

Congratulations, Chris! Great race and RR!

Since I was also out on the HIM course all freakin' day, I'll tell ya ... when that sun came out and the day went from cool and overcast to bloomin' hot ... lots of folks got off their game. For some people, nutrition and hydration were off because they were planning for the cooler race ... and for others, I think it was just the heat putting the additional drain on the body. At the end of the race, I was working the last road the runners passed before getting back to the FFA site ... and I saw ALOT of people finishing just out of sheer determination as they didn't have much else left.

You guys are AMAZING! YOU ROCK, sir!
