If your arms are fully extend and your hips have dropped in the water but your legs are up near the surface...the u change will put strain on your lower back. Generally this would happen if your head is popped up but your trying to keep your feet at the surface.

Tough to explain...easier to show ya.

i can picture that...the U shape..and it makes sense. Plus isnt the goal of using the board to get flat head to toe?

I don't use a board because it hurts my back. it's better to do kick sets without teh board anyway to practice balance which is the #1 consideration in improving your swim technique, IMO.
