Pre-race routine:

Woke up and it ws dark out. Had some oatmeal & OJ (no yoghurt before races anymore) & drove down to Cherry Creek.
Event warmup:

OK, so the last few days I've been having some achilles tendon problems so whether I did this or not was going to be a game time decision. My ankle felt ok this morning but when I started some light jogging to warm up I felt it right away. I would jog for 50ft then stop, hoping that when I started up again it would be ok but it wasn't. After stretching and jog/walking on it for a while it started to loosen up some but I still was leaning towards not even starting. Finally I decided just to start the race and at the first sign of problems I would shut it down.
Run
  • 24m 57s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs were a bit heavy to start after a week of training so I just settled in with the people around me. Turns out it was a fast pace (for me) but I felt good, especially since my HR was only low 170's. Around mile 2 my AT started with a dull pain so I eased off the pace, especially on the hills.
What would you do differently?:

Not run on a hurt ankle.
Transition 1
  • 02m 23s
Comments:

Stopped to use the toilet which added on about 1:30 probably.
What would you do differently?:

Hold it in.
Bike
  • 48m 36s
  • 17.49 miles
  • 21.59 mile/hr
Comments:

MAybe a little too hard right out of transition. Otherwise just pushed hard and felt pretty good. Didn't feel the AT at all for the whole ride.
What would you do differently?:

Took in some accelerade almost right away - maybe a little too soon because it upset my stomach for a few minutes.
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

Went fine, no issues.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 28m 56s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 18s  min/mile
Comments:

Got about 20ft out of transition and my AT was painful. Stopped & stood around trying to decide whether to quit or not. I wanted to practice runing off the bike though so I decided just to go for 5 minutes. Did a few run-20ft-then-walk before deciding on a plan to walk up the hills (AT felt worse on them) and run on the flats if it didn't hurt. Did this alternating jogging/walking for the 1st mile. 2nd mile the AT started feeling better so I ran at a slow pace. Gradually it started feeling better so I pushed the pace a little more.
What would you do differently?:

Same as 1st run.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed a water & banana & iced down my ankle. Chatted with Suan a bit - she took 2nd in her AG.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

One guess.

Event comments:

Except for starting 20 minutes late it was a good race. I'm really hoping I didn't make a stupid decision by doing this. Overall happy with my 1st run & bike though. New 5k PR without even trying (and I was 8-10 beats below LT) so I'm making progress.

Nice race!  And obviously a difficult AG to be in....easily in the top 1/2 overall....but the AG is different.  You men who are 30-39 have it tough.    Congrats on the 5K PR, your running is really kickin butt!
