Overall Rank = 120/179
Age Group = 35-40
Age Group Rank = 23/43
Pre-race routine:

Got up early, let the wife and kids catch a few more Z's. Woofed down three mini-bagels, snagged a cup o' coffee and headed out about 6:00am
Event warmup:

Wandering aimless around chatting with Tommy, Keith, Kevin, Rob, Wendy and Eric.
Swim
  • 14m 42s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 58s / 100 meters
Comments:

First open water, first wetsuit swim! Had a great time in the water - started slow and just keep going a bit fast and a bit faster....
What would you do differently?:

NOTHING!, well okay - probably should have kicked more.I do want to do more wetsuit swims
Transition 1
  • 03m 43s
Comments:

Very Long run from water to transition area!
And an uneven run up the hill to the bike mount point...

Age Group T1 rank: 22/43
Over all T1 rank: 103/173
What would you do differently?:

  • Get better at water to bike transition. Something about the horizontal to vertical change just does not do right by me...
  • Get better at running in bike shoes
  • Get faster at clipping in.
  • Bike
    • 47m 50s
    • 14 miles
    • 17.56 mile/hr
    Comments:

Felt like I was going to hurl on the first part of the bike. Not sure if it was from too much lake water or pre-race breakfeast but ugh!. Got my stomach back about mile 6, took a Hammer Gel (raspberry) about mile 8. Tasted raspberry the rest of the race.

About mile 11 I threw my chain off shifting the front while downshifting for a uphill. Remembered the advice of tzmitch and medic0020 and spun like a madman, picked the chain up and started climbing (speed went from in the upper teens to 9mph by the time I got the chain up). Too cool - thank you guys for that advice.

Got a cramp in my right shoulder/back of head area around mile 12. Not sure what to think of that...
    What would you do differently?:

  • Work on climbing hills.
  • Not fiddle with shifting so much (and dropping my chain because of it!).
  • Raise my average speed.
  • Not take a raspberry gel. Instead, try drinking more water and/or Gatorade just to keep the levels up.
  • Work on climbing hills.
  • Transition 2
    • 02m 2s
    Comments:

Again, I did not like the dismount to Transition area, very uneven. Did better getting in than I did gettting out in T1.

Lost my Race Belt and number at the bike - had to dig into all my stuff - turns out it was under the wetsuit! That cost me a good 10to30 second!

    Age Group T1 rank: 27/43
    Over all T1 rank: 129/173
    What would you do differently?:

  • Get better at running /w the bike!
  • Put the race belt on or under my running shoes!
  • Run
    • 29m 4s
    • 3.11 miles
    • 09m 21s  min/mile
    Comments:

Good - took about 1.5mi for my legs to make the transition. Did not like running with the hat on!
    What would you do differently?:

  • Focus training on some breaks
  • Work on more speed in running
  • nothing...
  • Post race
    Warm down:

See - event warm up (rinse repeat)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Sleep, or rather lack of it.
Training, or rather lack of it.

Nice job out there yesterday.  It was good to see you come out and have some fun racing.

Maybe try what I do for T2: put your number on top of your shoes with the tag ends of your race belt under your shoes (basically the race belt wraps around your shoes, but isn't fastened).  This does two things for me.  1) It prevents me from losing my number under stuff or having it blow away and 2) because it's on top of my shoes, I have to put my number on before I can put my shoes on so I don't have the opportunity to leave transition without my run number.

Works for me!  That was a kick butt swim, by the way.  Until yesterday I had never done a 750m swim under 15 minutes.  I'm envious of you being able to pull that out in your first OW swim.  No doubt your wife has imparted some super secret swimming wisdom on you.

The Barn Door comes out strong!  Nice job Jeff.  You turned in an awesome race yesterday.  That was a heck of a swim for your first OWS and shows you've made real progress.  I think you shocked the heck out of Keith by beating him out of the water.

Time to commit to Over the Mtn now

Nice job Jeff. Awesome swim. I have tried the spin trick several times to pick up a thrown chain and have yet to have it work. Glad it did for you though.  ROCK ON!!!
