Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5. Took my son potty and thought it would be a good idea to start stretching a little. I grabbed the bathroom counter and started to pull to stretch my back. Well, bad idea! I pulled my back out a little...a recurring injury that first happened about 5 years ago. I was a little panicked but figured coffee and a bagel with some muscle rub would fix it!
Event warmup:

Rode about 10 minutes swam a few. Visited the port-a-potty only 3 times!
Swim
  • 16m 57s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 16s / 100 meters
Comments:

Dropped a couple of minutes from last year! Felt pretty good throughout the swim. My back would twinge with every reach forward so I tried to focus on my roll and shorten the stroke a little. Helped.
What would you do differently?:

I forgot body glide around my neck and arms...ugh! Feeling it now!
Transition 1
  • 01m 26s
Comments:

O.K. transition over all. I was a bit winded from running up that hill after the swim. I grabbed my bike before i got my helmet on and ended up dropping my helmet and re-racking my bike to put it on. DUH. Novice mistake!
What would you do differently?:

Um, see above!
Bike
  • 34m 33s
  • 11 miles
  • 19.10 mile/hr
Comments:

A little surprised the time was this good. I'm most undertrained on the bike but hit a groove that I've never felt before at about mile 8. I was hitting a cadence and actually able to feel it.
What would you do differently?:

Train more before an event...does that count?
Transition 2
  • 00m 42s
Comments:

Almost ran into someone coming to the dismount area!
Run
  • 24m 57s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

This is the slowest recorded 5K time I've ever had! I was looking for about a 22:20 - 22:35. I'm working toward breaking 21 minutes in a straight 5K and am more run trained than anything. As I started, I felt my left calf begin to cramp but focused on hitting the heels first to stretch it out. I felt slow and shortened the stride and increased the cadence but was still struggling. I saw my friend Chris and knew I had to catch him! So, hit a groove just before turn around and let it go.
What would you do differently?:

Not real sure why this was so slow. Run faster, I suppose. After talking with several people and looking at the run splits of the Elites, i'm sure this was longer than 3.1.
Post race
Warm down:

Talked with David and his daughter and socialized a bit.

I think that run was more than 5K. At least by my measurements. That may be why your time was longer than you thought. Good race anyway and thanks for the info on camping.

Good job and I hope it was longer than a 5K, then my time was even better (for me anyway)- I can't fathom a 22 min 5K!

Gotta remember the bodyglide on the neck...

It was so cool to meet you just before the race! You look just like your avatar. And great, great job overall. I'm definitely thinking the run was a little longer, but you had an awesome 5K whether or not! Way to go!

Congrats on your performance. Sorry to have missed you at this race. Way to improve your time! And with a freshly-pulled back! Don't know about you, but I miss the old run course. See you at the races later this summer!

Great chatting with you before and after! I agree on the run, I was much slower than expected. It was either up or down hill, though, so maybe that had something to do with it.

Glad your back issue didn't hamper you, and great race! Get ready for the next one, and get those bike miles in.
