Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:45 am. Packed the car and drove 1 hour to the race. Got my transition stuff ready and my wetsuit on.
Swim
  • 21m 47s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 27s / 100 meters
Comments:

The swim was supposed to start at 8:40. I was waiting at the back instead of wading into the cold water too early. Then suddenly I heard 'go' about 2 or 3 minutes early. I had to swim between a bunch of slower swimmers and it took about 100m to get enough room to really move. I had a hard time swimming in a straight line a few times. The water was really cold, but I swam in it the day before so I knew what I was in for.
What would you do differently?:

I wore a Garmin Forerunner 201 under my swim cap. The map didn't turn out very good. I don't think I will bother next time.
Transition 1
  • 03m 37s
Comments:

The wetsuit came off easily.
I decided to put socks on for the bike. This was afterall a prep race for Ironman Canada and the Oliver Half.
What would you do differently?:

I accidentally hit the stop button on my watch. I didn't start it again until a few minutes into the bike.
Bike
  • 1h 08m 42s
  • 40 kms
  • 34.93 km/hr
Comments:

I really had to pee on the bike, but I just couldn't relax enough. Nobody passed me on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

I should learn to pee on the bike, but I don't want to get pee on my bike. Oh the great dilemmas in life!
Transition 2
  • 02m 53s
Comments:

I had to pee in T2. Then I forgot to grab my race number and had to run back. 8 people passed me in T2!!
Run
  • 43m 8s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 19s  min/km
Comments:

A lot of people passed me on the run. I was in 33rd place after T2 and ended up finishing 40th overall. But I don't think I could have run much faster than I did.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I've been focussing on weight loss for the last few months, and speed work on the run would have given me a running injury at me previous weight. I'm close to goal weight now with no running injuries. Now I can start the speed work.
Post race
Event comments:

The race was super well organized. I would do it again.

The water was very cold, and all 3 segments were too short.

Another speed demon!
Wow your fast too.
Nice work on getting aclimated to the water the day before even though I am sure that was just as much a shock to your body anyway.
Too bad about the 201.
Great job and keep up the great work.

Nice job! Sooo...did you start to get in the water, heard "5 minutes" then went and stood at the water's edge? Because that's what I did, and there was another guy that did that next to me as well....was it you? That would be pretty funny!

Anyways, good job on the race and good placing in your AG!

I think I was in to almost knee level when they said go.  I wasn't all the way back on the beach.  It might have been me though.  Most of the people were in the water.

Crazypop - 2007-05-14 10:52 AM  Too bad about the 201.

This is what I ended up with......

GPS Data from the swim course

Anywhere you see a straight line, you can tell for sure I had lost the GPS signal.  Honest, I can't swim in a straight line in open water.  Embarassed

But between the 2 laps, you can pretty much tell where the course went.
