Don't know if this has been discussed before. THis is a GREAT idea (from the new routte mapper article)

Keep your friends and family informed!

Another use for this:
Before going out on a ride or a run, leave the route up on your monitor with the distance markers active. This will let people at home know where you intended to be and in what direction you were headed.

My wife really appreciates it when I do this.  I show her the route and let her know my ETA.  I also call if I'm going to be a bit behind for some reason.  I think it's something so simple that can really help our S/O's feel safe for us.

Thanks for sharing this!

I do this at home and at work. Unfortunately, if I'm overdue at work someone would have to get IT to unlock my computer.

I always wear my road ID and tell my husband loosley where i am going. If i ride i have my cell phone...

probably should give more info on my actual route though...just to be safe.

Good idea.

That could work great, if I had routes mapped.  Most of my bike routes are more.... oh this looks interesting lets go this way.  I have a Road ID now, but that will not help other than to know who to contact if they find my body along the road.

I do carry my cell, but some of my routes take me into areas without cell service.  within 10 miles of my house I lose service for much of my ride.  Other parts or paths I have no problems, so some of it would depend on the route I ride.

When I first saw this thread title I thought that the developers had installed a feature into the mapper to prevent you from mapping your way off of a cliff, or into outer space, etc...

And I was thinking it would tell you when you mapped a route "Oh, don't go there, that's not a safe neighborhood" or "don't ride that road, there's no shoulder, it's very narrow with guard rails on both sides."  Heh, I guess we all hear/read what we want

(I was thinking that because I frequently plan my rides with the NJ Bike Map - njbikemap.com - which was done by someone who's ridden most of the roads on the map, and there are codes for a road being scenic, busy, etc. but sometimes I disagree with his assessment of "scenic" as some of the roads are so narrow it's hard to take in the scenery when you're so nervous you'll be run off the road!)

And one thing I've been advised by long-distance cycle tourists is:
Don't ask non-cyclists if a particular road is good for cycling or not!

My wife definitely appreciates when I map out my route and leave it up on my monitor.

I've actually done this before, but I've never really told my husband that's what I am doing.  I wonder if he knows?  Probably should tell him.
