Subject: Walden Swim weekend of May 19 or 26

I remember some time ago in some thread swadland was talking about swimming in Walden Pond some weekend of May.  I can't find that post.  Is it still happening?

I have been swimming in Silver Lake twice in the past week and water temp is 68F - not cold with wetsuit on.  I assume other open water bodies in MA to be similar in temperature.

Anyone up for a swim/bike brick at Walden this weekend or next?  However, I have only ridden around Walden/Concord area 2-3 times.  If we will be riding, we'll need someone to help plan out the routes.

swadland:  would you please "stick" this post to the top of the forum?

I'd definitely be up for it as long as it's early on the 19th or anytime on the weekend of the 26th.

I just moved to Reading from Rhode Island, so I'll be following someone else's lead on the bike.

Sundays are out for me as my girls play soccer. Walden Pond was 63 last Friday, I'm going tomorrow..it is deep so it warms up slower than other places.

Someone pick when/where/what and let us know if we can figure out if we can come.

This week is out for biking for me probably swimming to as I'm racing Sunday...next Saturday would be best for me...but if others are good for other times...go for it.

Joanne designed a fun ride to do from Walden Pond when Madcow was in town..maybe she could give us the map/route and we could do that again...beautiful ride!

Sounds like fun!  Unfortunately, I can't do this weekend and next weekend I'm taking two kids to Cape Cod.  I will post the bike ride we took with Madcow, which includes the ice cream stop.

I wish I could join you, but having a Mom, Nick and Samantha adventure will  be fun too.

I'm available early both days. Not for swimming, though. Sunday would work best for me. I could put a route together that would be pretty good - I have a route that starts in S.Acton that is 20 miles and has some challenging hills, but is off the beaten path, and goes through some nice areas. I was trying to get my friend out to Great Brook Farm on Sat for a mountain bike ride.

How about going on Saturday morning as me, DZ, csimpkins and maybe Max can make it?

I'm open all morning.

Folks,

It turns out that I'm only available on Sunday, due to a family commitment on Saturday.  But, if anyone else wants to come along I'd be willing to do a swim/bike brick.  My plan calls for a 1hr swim and 2hr ride, but if other folks want to go longer or shorter that's fine with me.

As an added incentive (depending on your point of view), I only live about 13 miles away, and if folks are interested (and the weather cooperates) I could pull together a quick BBQ lunch at my place.

I'm in if it's this weekend or for only a swim next weekend. I haven't been on my bike this much this year yet, so if we do a ride, I hope there's a cue sheet so I can get myself home when the rest of you have left me in the dust!

This Saturday sounds good to me. Let me know what time and I'll be there.

Speaking of which... where IS there? I've never been. Where do you park/meet?

Oh, and you may want to bring a camera. I'm sure my efforts to squeeze into the new wetsuit for the second time ever will be quite comical. Laughing

In further negotiations with my DW, I have been given the go-ahead to "opt out" of the family thing next weekend, so I could do either the 26th or 27th.  This weekend I'm doing the Marlboro race with FIRM, so I won't be able to make it.

I suggest 9am on Saturday, May 19, to start the swim.  Too early? Too late?

I think The long side of the pond is 900meter.  A lap would be 1800m.  If you don't plan on swimming, you might want to come 45 min late.

DZ.  would you please provide cue sheets for the bike route?

We can meet at the parking lot.  There are signs showing the "Walden Pond State Reservations" on Rte 2.

If it turns out to be a good workout, we may do it again next Sat/Sun.

Park Directions
Walden Pond State Reservation is located near Lincoln and Concord in the Greater Boston Area.
From Rte. 95/128: (North & South West of Boston area) Take exit 29B onto RT. 2 West, at 3rd set of lights take a left Onto RT. 126 South. Parking is ¼ of mile down on left.

From Rte. 495: (North & South West of Boston area) Take exit 29A Onto RT 2 East, at 6th set of lights take a right onto RT 126 South. Parking is ¼ of mile down on left.

From RT. 3: (North of Boston area & NH) Get onto RT. 62 West, Follow through Bedford center and into Concord, at stop sign there Is a Senkler Real Estate office directly in front of you, take a left, Follow road to the left around traffic circle, take next right onto Main St., take 1st left onto Walden St. Follow Walden Street until you get to the intersection of Route 2. I found this map of the pond online, from the place that KathyG is using for OWS lessons:

Da da DAAAAAAAAA! I'm back!

It has been quite some time since I've posted here, but I'm back! and I'll be at Walden this Saturday. I"m guessing the water will be pretty cold. Especially since it has not been all that sunny lately to warm up the top layer. It should be interesting!

I'll be down on the cape (and probably getting a swim or two in) that wweekend. So the 26th is a no-go for me.

I'm up for the 26th or 27th, depending on when folks are free.

I'm going to attempt to attach a cue sheet (no mile markers though...) for the 25 mile bike ride we did.

The weather looks iffy, so be safe if it's raining.  Samantha's dance recital is tomorrow, otherwisw I'd join you.

Depending on the weather, I'm going to try and make it on Saturday, but not sure when everyone is going to be there.  I'm limited by the fact that I need to drop my wife off at a bridal shower in Acton, and I think I will be at Walden around 11-ish.

Looks like we'll have quite a few for tomorrow.

akabak, csimpkins, DZ, redbullgt337, me, and Max.  It is ok to push back to 10am so that Max can join us for the ride?

As for next week, I am open both Saturday and Sunday.  Either is fine.

Edit:

I will bring my wetsuit.  But if it's too cold, I would ditch the swim and just ride.  My asthma is flaring due to allergy and I don't want to add on any cold-induce asthma.

I can throw together a cue sheet.

It looks like it is going to be VERY wet tomorrow. And COLD. I'm not sure I'm up for that punishment. What do people think?

I have no problem with the rain on the swim (water is water). But it'll be pretty chili heading from the water to the bike, and I'm not really in the mood to risk getting sick with a race just a few weeks away.

A swim later in the morning works fine for me. More chance for it to dry up and (hopefully) get some sun to warm that water!

I've got no problem with doing 10:00 instead.  I'm also hoping to swim even if it rains.  Good training for those  unpredictable race day conditions.  Especially with Mooseman right around the corner!

But... if it IS raining, I'm probably going to skip the bike.  I just got my baby tuned up and I'd hate to get her all cruddy.  She gets angry if I don't treat her right.

Smile
