Pre-race routine:

Got up at an ungodly hour so that I could set up my bike stuff in transition. I technically didn't start racing until my father ran into T1 from the swim at appx 7:41am, but still had to make sure all was ready for my ride since the race officially began at 6:15 a.m.

Ate banana and whole wheat bagel with PB at 4:30a.m. 2 cups of chai tea.
Event warmup:

Chit-chated with the competition while we waited for our peeps to hit the T1 tent. Some people were confused as to whether they could wear socks or gloves at T1 (the rules only specified no bike helmet and bike shoes at the timing chip handoff). I said screw it and put on all things non-helmet and non-shoes. I figured someone would tell me to take them off if it was against the rules. Others followed suit.

Comments:

I saw 2 people hit the T1 relay tent at 26 - 28 mins after the relay team swim start. INSANE!! These people were some serious swimmers. Needless to say, I was gettin' antsy watching people take off on their bikes before me.

What would you do differently?:

Bring MP3 so I don't have to listen to other peoples non-sense at T1.
Bike
  • 3h 15m 17s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.21 mile/hr
Comments:

Seemed like most of the cyclist in the mixed relay were men. I played the passing game with a few of them for an hour or so and then everyone started to spread out.

What would you do differently?:

Train more. The distance was fine - started to have muscle fatigue around mile 40, but I really would like to get faster. I can't complain too much, however, since I'm up from 16 mph to 17 mph in 5 months.

Comments:

Ken took off on the run and I anticipated he'd avg 9.5 min/mile. That's what he posted for the 1st half of the ING full. But due to the heat and stomach issues, it took Ken much longer. Finding him on the course was difficult b/c I didn't know what pace he was keeping. Come to find out later that he had a cell phone with him. (Would've been nice to know early on.) When we finally saw Ken coming down the home stretch I decided to run in with him. (Wasn't this a "Team" thing. Shouldn't we all get to cross the finish line??)

Course: The roads were flat with the exception of a bridge. I'm not sure I'll ever do GCT again (or IMFL) due to the road conditions on the hwy. It was a really rough ride. Seemed like most of the roads had not been maintained in quite some time. A lot of people lost bottles along the route. I have become efficient in dodging objects. It got pretty hot after a while (Relay teams started the swim last). I started to feel sorry for Ken since he couldn't begin running until I got back from the bike and it was only getting hotter and god knows I was only getting slower.

Yeah you for crossing the finish line ... relays are by definition a TEAM effort - and 56 miles is no ride in the park when you have the heat, head winds and bad road conditions.

Congratulations on upping your sustained mph.
