I've heard mixed answers to questions about what to drink, eat etc. during a race. Some people use Gatorade or some electrolyte replenisher, others use gels or even power bar type foods. Does it mainly depend what works best for you or more determined by the length of the race? Any input is greatly appreciated.

frozen pizza slices or pop tarts are what i carry on race day.

ha! i wish......

i think this is a matter of personal preference. I used gatorade for a while and found i was burping it up..... then i made my own mix of water downed orange juice with some salt in it and a touch of honey and that seemd to work on the bike. I try to eat some solids now like a 1/4 of a banana or raisons (which are small and pack full of instant power).... i am much more a naturalist and really don't buy into the powerbar/ gatorade stuff.... but then again i am not doing this professionally i do it to be fit.

i find that after my workouts/ and i have yet to try this at the end of a race, i drink alot of water but add a heaping teaspoon of Spirulina to it....this brinks me right back to form and like i haven't even taxed myself out there, even after a 30 minute run at full 85% THR.

I think that you will get a lot of difference responses to your question due to the fact that everyone may tolerate something differently from the other person. Some people water down their Gatorade while others like me will drink it straight. Personal preference is what a lot of it comes down to. If it right for your nutritionaly and you body can tolerate it that what you should use.

I like Gatorade, and usually use Hammer Gel on the Bike and Run. After a workout I will usually consume a tube of Jogmate and this seems to help me recover.

if you go to a bookstore and buy this months issue of triathlete magazine it tells you which products works for which athlete. they look at many different things from pre race bars to post race and post workout replacement supplements. it is a good article. dont be afraid to try different things to see what does and does not work.

Thanks for the replies. I'm still experimenting to see what works for me. I tend to also burp Gatorade, so I stick to the water. I subscribed to Triathlete about a month ago and am eagerly awaiting my first issue...

I am new in the world of triathletes..but I grown fond of the gels you can eat. I do agree it is a personal thing though. I don't do well on race day if I eat anything solid before the race. Drinking too much water and or gatorade for energy also can be bad. That is why I love the gel, it leaves my stomach feeling empty but still gives me an energy boost for the race. The only bad thing is that they are not cheap, I bought a bootle of it for $22, which is a little cheaper than buying the individual packs. Anyways...keep up the training!

I use blue powerade with a half a scoop of whey protein powder. It seems to keep me from bottoming out too bad (hypoglycemic). Simple carbs kick my A#$&. 20-30 minutes up then crash. I tried accelerade but couldn't handle the taste. I like this a lot better and it really has seemed to work for me. Also, I use hammer gel for that. As far as electrolyte replacer. Haven't really raced more than 2 hours so that's never been a huge issue for me.

Gatorade burps!!! YUCK!!

I use both gatorade or Low Oz and Power gels, vanilla flavored. All followed by lots of H2O. Otherwise I too get and upset stomach. I do rely on the electrolyte fluids more than the solid due to digestion and absorption issues during increased activity.

I've been experimenting a lot and have found for myself that a sports drink is the best for me. Hydration plus minerals and carbs during workouts. On a run that is the best I can ask for as there is no way I am going to eat anything while running. The gels picked me up well but dropped me like a hot potato after about 15 mins they were like a roller coaster. The sports drink smooths things out. On bike you can eat without worrying about it so bananas are great but I rarely go on rides longer than 50K so I don't bother with food on the bike.
