So who is in for the 2008 installment of the Ford Ironman California 70.3?

Registration is open and should remain so for a while longer if you are still on the fence about doing it. (At least if past history is any indication)

I made the final decision last night to do this race again in 2008. I have a marathon I would really like to run that is 3 weeks + 2 Days later but I think that should be fine.

Just registered this morning.

Hope to see some of you out there in March. It sure was cool to run a race where I actually knew someone else who was doing it

2 weeks before IMAZ.  As much as I would like to go and avenge the run... and errr, the bike... and while I'm at it, the transitions......Unlikely.....

Yeah, I had a feeling IMAZ was going to be a conflict for you.

Oceanside is not going anypace and will be here for you to come back and dominate. I bet It will feel like a sprint distance after doing a full Ironman

Very likely for me.

I need revenge on everything, starting with even the place I will stay.

I'm toying with idea of doing this one.  Would you all recommend it?  Miles 30-45 look pretty tough for the bike course.  How much of the run is on the sand?  I also need to look up average temperatures.  I'm a wimp.  Any thoughts would be much appreciated.  Thanks!

I personally did not find the bike course to be overly difficult but of course, everyone is different. (I regularly train on parts of both the run and the bike course) Wildflower and a few other local races were much tougher. There are some hills on the back side of the course but they are manageable if you know what's coming. (The course profile seemed to accurately represent)

The real hidden issue with the course is the trip back. (About the last 10 miles or so) A prevailing "Onshore" wind is very common here and the canyons tend to amplify this. A common mistake for this course is to go out too hard and burn up on the hills and then struggle over the last 10 miles on relatively flat terrain heading directly into a stiff wind.

The thing of it is, the wind did not seem to be there this year and so the last 10 miles were quite enjoyable. (I cruised the last 10 miles and prep'd for the run)

As for the "Sand Road'. The course was rerouted due to the fact that beach erosion had eaten most of the beach away. Instead, we got a small up and down in the beginning, and they chopped off a bit on the other end of the out and back.

I doubt if the sand road will ever be a feature of this race again. The city is currently building a proper bridge over the river to replace the current road in the river bottom that we ran on this year. (Not to mention the fact that the beach is still missing a lot of sand.

I personally found this course to be very fair and quite PR friendly. The one issue I might have with it is the run course is mostly concrete. I will probably opt for a set of Cushioned Trainers rather than Racing (Performance) shoes.

The best part about this race IMO is that it is an NA race. Everything about this race is first class and they leave nothing out. The Pizza Feed at the end along with the "Muscle Mangement" area were top notch. (They never did run out of Pizza even during the awards ceremony)

Oh, the weather was perfect this year, but has been both hot and cold in previous years. 2007 was the year they moved the race to the end of March and this seems to have worked out well. The air and water temps were ideal.

Come out and join us

I noticed that you did Ironman Hawaii 70.3.

Just a quick comparison of the bike course elevations, I would bet you would find IMCal's Bike Course to be either about the same or even a bit easier than Hawaii.

Hawaii was an out an back with a big hill at the turnaround. IMCal is a single loop and the first half of the course is pretty flat. (Rides along the coast)

The hillier parts are on the back side but your basically done by mile 45 and have some flats and downhills that you can make up gobs of time. (Or do what I did and take it easy to  prep for the run)

I wish NAS would graph both of them together like you can with the other races

Thanks for all the info!  I'm seriously thinking about joining you all.  I wanted to do Hawaii 70.3 again, but my best friend is getting married on that day...so, I wanted to find another 70.3.  This one looks fun.

For those of you that did the race last year, it is hard staying motivated during the winter season. I'm a wimp when it comes to swimming and it is cool outside, and with shorter days how do you get your biking in?

My thought for the bike would be to do short rides during the week (speed and just a moderate ride) and on the weekend do my LSD ride. Does that sound about right?

I'm still a little nervous about the run. I figure I am 7 months out, with swimming I can join a masters swim team to help me improve my stroke, biking I do group rides I just have to add some speed workouts and with my run... if I can speed walk or run/walk I'd be happy right now I'm at a 13:30 min/mile. Not great but alot better from wear I started at 17:00 min/mile.

Did not seem to be a too much of a problem for me, but then I raced through the winter season. I did the Orange County Marathon in January and the PacShore Half in February.

PacShore was sort of a Tuneup race that several of us did (Who were also doing IMCal) and that seemed to be excellent timing.

Maybe we can get some interest going in doing PacShore as a Tuneup again. (I am already planning for it but not sure if anyone else is)

Might also be cool to start a weekly training thread for IMCal. (Might help a bit to keep us all motivated)

If I do this race I have to keep someone on me all the time. I'm finding that I need the extra push because if its just me, I'm going to slack off. Maybe the closer we get when can set up a group ride. I have a DOD sticker to get onto Pendelton so it's never a problem for me to get on base.

Did this race sell out last year?  If it did when did it sell out.  I'm trying to talk the hubby into doing the race with me :-)

Aw heck.  I went ahead and signed up last night.  Figure it will be a decent tuneup for Lanzarote.

iwantotri: I was watching the signups last year and it didn't sell out until sometime early this year, but I can't remember when exactly.  plus, it's so new, it's really hard to predict when it will sell out.

I decided to do this race instead of the LA Marathon so that I can get a HIM under my belt before I race the Florida 70.3 in May.  The Florida 70.3 I expect to be more difficult since you can't wear a wetsuit and because of the humidity.  I look forward to racing the California

Does anyone have any insight into the rolldown porcess at Cali 70.3? Not for Kona or Clearwater, but for other full IM races. How deep into the placings did they go.

Crazy as it seems given that my first ever tri (a sprint, at that) isn't until next weekend, I was mulling over giving this a shot earlier today. I figured it'll sell out, so if I want to go for it, I can't wait until I'm 100% certain I'll be ready. The sticking point, though, looks like how soon it comes on the heels of the LA marathon, which I'm definitely committed to. I'm confident I'll be up to a HIM next year...but I dunno about doing my first HIM four weeks after my second marathon...

I will be registering this weekend! I broke my leg training for IM Az earlier this year and this will be my first race in over a year. I've heard great things about it and I'm really excited to be training again!

At enginerd's prompting I signed up for this. I haven't biked that far nor swam that far yet, but I'm sure I will before then ;-)

swimming is my archilles heel but I'll be a fish-in-training from here on out.

Hi Sylvain.  Sorry I missed your reply before!  I haven't yet made my travel plans so I'm not sure.  Many IM undertakings always seem to also include a lot of additional costs for housing, etc. but since my sister lives there I can always stay at her place and/or use our family's RCI timeshare to keep costs down.

I would be careful about doing the marathon than the HIM.  Xan did both last year and it was tough he said.

Do a lot of hill training for the bike.  There was one big hill on it (the first one) that took a lot out of me.  Hurt my run as well.

The swim wasn't bad at all.  It is in a protected harbor.  A little on the cold side...just need to practice in cold water prior and you should be fine.
