Thief River Falls Triathlon

Overcast
Total Time = 1h 35m 46s
Overall Rank = 60/93
Age Group = Athena
Age Group Rank = 1/2
Pre-race routine:

Trying to stay warm because it was freezing cold out.
Event warmup:

Running around, setting up transition zone, huddling inside in the warm building.
Swim
  • 10m 36s
  • 500 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

chose to draft off the persons in my lane. Had trouble getting out of the pool because of a funny ledge. Felt pretty good throughout. Concentrated on staying calm and sticking with my usual breathing. Have no idea how my stroke was; close to how it should have been?
What would you do differently?:

Gotten out of the pool faster. Maybe swim in the lane with the ladder next year.
Transition 1
  • 02m
Comments:

wasn't going to put socks on this year, but it was so cold, I thought I'd lose toes to frost bite if I didn't.
What would you do differently?:

dry my feet off better before trying to put on socks.
Bike
  • 48m 25s
  • 12 miles
  • 14.87 mile/hr
Comments:

Not long after the turnaround point, I was changing to a much lower gear because I was now biking into a strong headwind/crosswind and my bloody chain came off! Again! I'm not sure how I did that, but this time I had to stop my bike and work to get it back on. Wasted a couple minutes futzing around with it before I could take off again. It was fun biking back with grease all over my hands, trying to push up my shades.
What would you do differently?:

Not mis-shift and drop my chain.
Transition 2
  • 02m
Comments:

Runners went on easily and quickly.
Run
  • 32m 32s
  • 3.27 miles
  • 09m 57s  min/mile
Comments:

Started the run taking really short strides. I could not feel my feet at all as they were totally frozen. Thighs were completely numb. I was tempted to turn off to our hotel, which was right off of the race course, to warm up or quit. The crazy thoughts that enter our heads during these events!
By the time weigh2go caught up to me about 15 minutes later, I finally could feel something again and my stride started to smooth out. I had my fastest 5k time ever today: 31:05, and knew I was going to finish well. Again, didn't have anything left for a kick at the end, but am glad that I left it all on the course and didn't play it conservatively today.
What would you do differently?:

nothing. I did great!
Post race
Warm down:

change into warm dry clothes, sit in the hottub at the hotel, eat at the Chinese buffet.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

loosing my chain, the wind, trouble getting out of the pool.

Event comments:

Took home some hardware today! Placed first in the Athena group. Took off 15 minutes from last year's time. Yee Haw!

Congrats on your race!  Great improvement over last year.  TRF was my first tri two years ago and it was plenty windy that day...I can almost feel the wind out there by the airport! I'll bet you're smiling now!

Great job out there in the cold last weekend

15 minutes off of a sprint time is huge.

Your pacing looks really consistent throughout and it seems like you were able to keep your wits about you in spite of the usual unexpected race happenings.

Oh, and Congratulations on your 1st Place Finish

Alright!!!!

Great job on the hardware...and even better - TAKING OFF 15 MINUTES FROM LAST YEAR

That is Totally rocking for a SPRINT distance to take off that much time. shows the steady workouts and training time are really paying dividends.

Outstanding, Outstanding!!!!
