Hi All,

I've been suffering from calf cramps so I'm looking for suggestions for everyone's favorite sports drink/electrolyte replacement. I've never tried much except the stuff that is handed out a races...but I never investigate what brands were at what races. I've found gatordade/powerade is too sweet.

I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Nuun electrolyte tablets. They lack the sweetness but give you the electrolytes.

Seems you need more electrolytes.

I use Gatorade and add Nuuns to it to get more electrolytes that makes it equal to Gatorade Endurance but cheaper and in the flavors I like.

I get cramps as well and have upped my sodium intake even more so while racing in hot weather. I don't get cramps training only racing.

My goal is to take in about 1000 mg of sodium an hour thru what I drink and if necessary take extra sodium in endurolytes or Lava Salt.

One or two issues ago one of the triathlon magazines had a really good article on hydration and electrolytes...I'd recommend you try and find it and read it.

It is a balance of taste, calories needed per hour and electrolytes you need all which is variable between triathletes.

Accelerade, least, I've been trying it for some time, it seems 'ok' but the taste isn't quite right. We'll see how it works out at the end of the 60 serving can.

I use Cytomax, fruitpunch flavor. Someone turned me on to it in the beginning of this season and I've been using it regularly.  It serves it's purpose and I like the taste enough that it makes me drink a little more than I would if it were plain water.  I don't like Gatorade at all, but I haven't tried any of the others to compare.

I had a friend recommend Sports Beans. Gatorade makes me sick and gel doesnt' sound very appetizing, but jelly beans . . . YUM! I picked some up this weekend, but I'm saving them for a long run.

I also really like the Nuun tablets.  They provide the electrolytes without being super sweet like Gatorade.  I use that during my rides.  If they are longer, I tend to also take gels or Clif Shot Blocks.

I also try to make sure I am getting enough potassium when I train.  I've had problems with calf cramps, too.  Eating a banana about a half an hour before going out has helped me a lot.

I had some calf cramping for the first time in the first 10K race I did yesterday. This is helpful advice. I'm going to try nuun because I sweat a LOT.

I make my own.  In a gallon of water - 1 cup sugar, 2 packets Koolaid (you pick the flavor) 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp Lite Salt.  This is pretty heavy on the salt, but I need it.  I like doing it this way cause I can pick the flavors of Koolaid I like the best - for some reason most sports drink taste really awful to me, and also I can customize the amount of salt.

I also use Endurolytes (by Hammer) they are great.

You could spend all day reading what other people's preferences are, but in the end you need to do your own research and try out a few brands to see what works best for you.

Consider the following...

- what are you hoping to get from a sports drink - calories, protien, electrolytes, caffeine, etc
- what you can afford
- what brand/flavor tastes good enough that you will drink it on long runs/rides/races
- what brand your digestive system can handle over several hours without upsetting your stomach or giving you the runs
- what is easy for you to carry and consume during long rides and runs

Gatorade, Gatorade Endurance, Accelerade, Gu20, Cytomax are popular sports drinks to try. You might also consider using Gel packs along with sports drinks and water. Others use electrolyte tablets, water, and a sports drink in combination to get calories and electrolytes together.

You need to work this out in your training over time, so by race day you know what works and what is safe.

What tastes good to me should have no impact on your own nutrition plan.

I love sweet stuff... but even these were TOO SWEET for me on ride. Not to mention, they all melted together in 100 degree heat (I live in Texas).

Shot blocks are good. They are easy to eat, taste better than the gels, but produce the same results. You can put them in a ziplock baggy in a beneto box or in your jersey on a ride. Very easy to grab and eat on the go.

I will be trying out a few of these suggestion. I got cramps this past weekend in both calves during the bike portion, holy smokes that hurt. I hydrated heavy all week on water, drank gatorade with a banana before the race, and a gel before the bike, and still cramped.

Cadreamer- Minus the sugar, this is the exact recipe that my vet recommends for our horses in the summer.   The Lite Salt is potassium choloride.  I never thought to add sugar and drink it myself.  Duh.

I second the use of infinit custom blend.  You have the ability to design your formula based on your specific needs.  I also occasionally supplement with Endurolytes in hot weather.

x3 on InfinIT.  I use that on the bike and Gatorade Endurance on the bike.  I did not completely eliminate calf cramps til I went with Succeed tablets (about 330 mg sodium v 50 or so per ecap)  Two per hour on hot days does the trick for me.

To the 2 persons that recommended InfinIT, thank you.  It's helped me, along with pretzels, Clif Shot Blocks (Cran-Razz, yummy).  The only thing about InfinIT (or most other sport drinks is that on the bike it spills a little and gets sticky.

Regarding cramps, check out my IMWI race report to read about nasty cramps during the swim -

A combination of (proper) nutrition, hydration, and training will get it solved.

I'm a loyal Accelerade user. My LBS was out last time, so I bought the GU2O. It's the "Coors light" of energy drinks: No flavor and no kick to it. That being said, it's worked out OK my last 2 races, so something must be OK with it.

Your undermix must be really thin.

I'm going back to Accelerade though once I finish this.

Stick with it. It took me a while, but I'm hooked. One thing I have found is that it mixes better with warm water. I keep 16oz bottles in the garage and mix 2 scoops the night before. Then put it in the fridge. That protein can make it clumpy.

I frequently use cytomax as a sports drink; though I am working with Infinite to find a better drink for long rides. I am also a fan of both nuun and Hammer E-caps.

As it was stated, you need to find out what works for you.  One of the easiest ways to do that is to eliminate things that do NOT work for you.
