Sunny
Total Time = 1h 44m 55s
Overall Rank = 147/368
Age Group = Male 45-49
Age Group Rank = 15/32
Pre-race routine:

Got there over an hour early, already had a good crowd. Designated parking was about a mile away, checked tire inflation, finished packing bag, and rode the bike to transition area.

Set up area, went to porta-potti, visited with friends, back to porta-potti. Then, SURPRISE! Three of my sisters and their families showed up to cheer me on. Evidently my wife had arranged it and her and the boys kept it a secret. All of them live at least an hour away, and to get there by 7 in the morning took some effort, but I was really glad to have the additional support.

After visiting with them, I went back to the porta-potti, then zeroed my watch and bike computer, grabbed my cap and goggles and went down to the water.
Event warmup:

Too busy visiting and setting up to warm up. Like my friend says, let the swim be the warm-up for the bike ride.
Swim
  • 19m 30s
  • 800 yards
  • 02m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

Expected to be in the 22-24 minute range on the swim so this was a little of a surprise.First open-water swim, first wave start, so I was a little trepidatious at the start, counted to ten to let everyone get out of the way, but it didn't help. There was a little jostling, at one point someone pushed my head underwater, but not bad at all, never any reason to think about panicking.

Once I got into a rhythm, I alternately swam 30 strokes freestyle and 20 strokes breast stroke to catch my breath and sight the buoys. Worked well, but I was breathing hard at the end.

Comments from the race staff indicate that the course was longer than 800 yards.
What would you do differently?:

Plan is to get some coaching over the winter. I would love to be able to freestyle the whole thing, but my technique is evidently too inefficient to allow that.
Transition 1
  • 02m 59s
Comments:

Had about a 300 yard run up an embankment and along an asphalt road. I was so out of breath from the swim that I walked up the bank and ran/walked the road. Got socks, shoes, and helmet on easily, then had to run about 100 yards with bike.
What would you do differently?:

Come out of the swim fresher and able to run.
Bike
  • 54m 55s
  • 20 miles
  • 21.85 mile/hr
Comments:

Nice that this was such a familiar route; I did most of my swim/bike workouts on this route so I knew the roads well. They put down a new surface on a part of the road the week before, but opinions were split as to whether that made it better or worse.

Found a good pace early, passed a lot of those smarty-pants fast swimmers! Eventually some of the younger guys in the following wave passed me as well, but it was a good ride. Fastest average I've ever achieved on that long of a ride, tried hard to get it over 22mph, but just too many turns.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Maybe push a little harder, but I wanted to save something for the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

Got hung up trying to dismount, nearly fell before I extricated myself from the pedal. Had to run the 100yds again with the bike, took too much time changing shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Need to practice both transitions, maybe get some tri shoes for the bike so I can do the leave-the-pedals-on-the-bike thing. My Sidis are nice road shoes, but the ratcheting buckle makes it a little harder to get in and out.
Run
  • 26m 9s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

Hot.

By this time it's 9 am, the sun is high, and it is hot: 90 degrees, 90% humidity hot. The run is on an airport service road with absolutely no shade. I find a pace just under the point where my diaphragm begins to get a stitch, and try to hold that pace while holding the stitch in abeyance. At the three water stops, I drink a cup and pour a cup on my head. Not much of a kick at the end, just a long steady pace throughout

What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Maybe do the run in late October.
Post race
Warm down:

Stop to wait for and congratulate a couple friends I had passed during the last mile, then went for some gatorade. Went back on the course with my family to watch and cheer in the rest of my friends.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swimming technique? Weather? Overall I was very happy with my first full-distance sprint.

Event comments:

Very well-organized event, put on by local guys who do two or three other events.

re: "smarty-pants fast swimmers" - Hey, easy on us fast swimmer types! And what makes us smarty-pants, anyways? I'll cop to something myself...I HATE fast bikers who can't swim worth a nickel. =)

Anyways. Great bike split and way to hang in there on the run. 90 degree heat, no shade...ouch.

Good Race Report!  Had several friends race the race, some of them probably had Red River Tri Club apparel on.  Congrats on your race.

I almost stopped reading at this point: "Set up area, went to porta-potti, visited with friends, back to porta-potti. Then, SURPRISE!" Glad I soldiered on....

Way to go! Great race, Bear. Congrats!

Thanks. My goal was to average 22mph, fell just a little short, but I'm happy. Unless I look at the ten people in my age group, or the 93 people in the race that posted better times. There is plenty room for improvement. The fastest cyclist averaged 26mph, not coincidentally that guy won the overall event.

Bear, Congrats on an great race...and an awesome bike split.

BTW...I grew up in Cajun Country...Opelousas native.  Road with Pack & Paddle for years before moving away for work.  And I went to USL.

Yes, it was 20 miles, bonafide, verified, I've ridden the course many times. See above, the fastest rider (and eventual winner) rode the course in 46:14. That's 26mph. At 54:55 (just a shade under 22mph), I was the 94th fastest cyclist and the 10th fastest in my age group (out of 32). Plenty of room for improvement!
