Total Time = 57m 6s
Overall Rank = 26/169 M
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 5/20
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:45, ate a pb bagel and 1/2 bannana. Had some coffee and drove down to the race.
Event warmup:

Biked for 20 minutes, some easy spin ups. Ran for about 15 minutes. Got into the wetsuit and headed to the swim start, I swam for about 5 minutes before the start.
Swim
  • 10m 37s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 17s / 100 yards
Comments:

Not a bad swim, I had hoped for the water to be a little choppier. The current was not to bad and I may have mis-judged how far to the left of the buoy to start. Lots of bodies at the buoys so it was a little crowded getting around them.
What would you do differently?:

I need a different pair of goggles for the open water swims, I lost some time when I had to stop swimming to spot the buoys.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

There are no transition splits in this race, too many transitions I guess. I had a good transition anyway, wetsuit came right off, I used running shoes and cages for the race due to the short bike and number of transitions.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, I feel like my transitions are getting better.
Bike
  • 23m 30s
  • 8 miles
  • 20.43 mile/hr
Comments:

Not a bad bike, it's so short that I don't think the really good riders can gain much time. The first bike I just went hard, the second bike I was trying to catch another rider in my age group that passed me. First bike was 12:21, second was 11:09

What would you do differently?:

My bike still needs improvement, I should have been able to hold a higher average speed for such a short distance.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 23m
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt like I had a good run, I tried to stay on the hard pack sand as much as possible. The second run was what I was most happy with, there was a guy in my age group that kept looking back to see where I was, and I finally caught and passed him at the end.
What would you do differently?:

Paid more attention to the people around me, the other AG guy knew exactly where I was, it took me till the end of the first run to figure that out.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked for a few minutes, thought about sticking my legs in the water but that seemed like too much effort.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Being faster

Event comments:

Found Mary right before the finsh chute, stayed to cheer on some of the other people from our club.
All in all a great weekend, we stayed at a condo for the weekend, what could be better than racing and staying at the beach!

Course: The first two miles are tough, they advertise about 1/4 mile on the beach, I would guess that it's more like a mile. You start out on pavement, run down to a crossover over the dunes (nice steep stairs), then on the beach itself to a turnaround and back. The second run is all pavement, out and back.
