Pre-race routine:

We arrived in Galena on Friday afternoon, the Tri Club, rented 5 houses. We hit T1 to drop off the bikes and head back to the Territory to make a house pasta dinner.
Event warmup:

Arrived at T2 at 5:45 to set up T2 and ensure we had parking at the park. Well we were the first people to arrive. Note to self. Arrive 90 mins later next year. Took the Shuttle to Apple Cannon lake and set up T1 and hit the water for a few warm up strokes. The water was 68'ish about 9 degrees warmer than last year. The swim would not be shortened this year :)

Comments:

I forgot my goggles at home and had to buy at pair on Friday at the race site. The goggles and I didn't get along at all. I couldn't get a seal on the right side at all. This wasn't going to be a major issue but would piss me off.

Lined up in my normal spot for the start. Front row outside edge. HR at the start was 145!!! I guess I was jazzed for the swim after all. Horn sounded and we're off...right goggle filled right away, stopped to empty after the first turn and continued the theme after each turn. Caught two waves of prior swimmers.

Exited the water 8:56 run to the T1 mat to end the swim time was 9:28
What would you do differently?:

Not take my swim bag out of my backpack. Can't really compare to last years time since the swim was shortened.

Comments:

We have to pack up T1 in bags after you strip your wetsuit. T1 bags are then collected and driven in trucks to the finish. So its a different mind set. You want to be fast, but make sure you collect all your stuff.

2006 T1: 3:14
2007 T1: 2:24

What would you do differently?:

I wore flip flogs this year, the gravel was too much last year.
Bike
  • 59m 31s

Comments:

Welcome to hell boys. The course is all climbing duh we're in the Mississippi Valley. The road out to stage coach is short steep climbs, about 4 miles, for those climbs. HR was 178 out to stage coach road. I was passing tons of people as several of the prior waves were off the bike walking up the hills. I had my 12-25 cassettee which was golden! I passed a Tri clubber who I was staying with, we would play leap frog the entire race.

Once you hit stage coach road the short steep climbs are over and its time for the long gradual climbing which I HATE!!! Spent most of the climbs, out of the saddle dancing on the peddles and would hold on for dear life when it was time to decend. I was getting blow all over the road and at 40mph that isn't a fun feeling.

After the "Jesus Saves" climb, most of the climbing is done its time to fly in the aero position. The last climb again had people off the bike walking. Head winds with some cross winds made for a slower times overall this year.

2006: 1:12:x
2007: 59:13

Very happy with this time. This bike leg will be your slowest of the season. My 1/2 Iron pace is faster than this, lol.

2006 T1: 2:54
2007 T2: 1:50

Much faster than last year.

Run
  • 37m 48s
  • 4.3 miles
  • 08m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

The hill out of T2 is a monster. The run course is basically 2 miles uphill and then 2 miles down hill. I ran up the hill again, which spiked my HR to 184. I saw the D3 BT kit, from himself, and yelled but I don't think he heard me. Pretty uneventfull. Up and down and back around...the race was over.
What would you do differently?:

I think I might walk the hill next year and see how my run goes...

2006: 36:48
2007: 37:48

A min slower than last year. However, the winds made for a tougher day.
Post race
Warm down:

Hung out with the TRI club. A few members won hardware and bottles of Galena Wine.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Headminds and those hills.

Event comments:

2006: 2:04:09
2007: 1:50:50

Very happy with my time. Very challenging course, looking forward to racing on flat ground, lol.

I saw way too many IPODS and one jacka** raced without a helmet.

Awesome race Hayes...O.K., now I don't feel like the Fargo course was so tough.  Way to hang on those hills.  Did you feel almost like Lance in the Pyrenees?  Dang, you swim fast...

Great race!  Definitely took some major time off last year's race, that's for sure.  You're all ready for SoR now!

Nice job on the race and the improvements you made this year! I think the course was slower in general but you still took some good chunks out of last year's time. Unfortunately I didn't hear you while I was running down the hill. All I could hear was the thumping of my feet while I was concentrating on not ending up rolling down that thing. I did hear them announce your name at the end though and saw you outsprint some guy there - nice work. Hope you guys had a good time up there.
