It's that time ... heading out to the beach soon and wanted to see if a few people wanted to come along. I'm going with a friend. Hopefully before my first tri so I can re-acclimate to the open water and get used to the new wetsuit. Anybody? Anybody? Bueller? Bueller?

I'll be starting regular weekend open water swims in the next week or two.  I may come down to the city to join you for one or two.  If you feel like heading up to the northern burbs you could always join me there as well.  I have a nice semi-private 1.1 mile across lake to swim in.  I can usually have someone piloting a nice pontoon boat as a chase boat just to make sure no waverunners get too close.

OK I'm hoping to do one this week -- perhaps tomorrow (Wednesday, May 30) ... I hope people will read this today so they might tell me WHERE to go. I hear some of the beaches here have actual meter markers, which would be really cool. If we get enough people (three or more) we can swim in shifts and have the others watch the wallets, purses, clothes, etc.

Anybody up for some OWS? The beaches are officially open!

Go to the stretch between Chicago Ave and Navy Pier along LSD. The Ohio Street beach area is really shallow, but swimmable. The stretch has markers that coordinate along the running path that you can gauge your distance. There were a few folks out there this evening when we were running. One guy didn't have a wetsuit on...but something tells me it's not warm enough for that just yet.

By the way...if OutOfShapeGuy goes, even if I'm not up for swimming, I'll come and hang out and watch everyone's stuff. It's the least I can do...since we're married and all.

That's mighty kind of yas. I don't know that I'll be able to make it tonight after all because I have a meeting for Team in Training I need to attend. Do you konw if the water's shallow enough to stand? Like 5 feet?

It is indeed shallow enough to stand as long as you stay toward the left when you swim out.

Are you with the TNT tri group? OOSG and I are TNT marathoners this season.

Yeah this is my second year. I did a tri last year for them too. Looks like the meeting is at 7 p.m. tonight. I could probably make it to Ohio Street Beach by 5:30 p.m. and get a good 40 minutes of swimming in. But I really don't want to go alone since I'm riding my tri bike down there and OWS alone is NOT SAFE! Are you guys going for sho'?

wish i could make it tonight, but I've got a previous engagement... let's set up another time.... OWS isn't really dangerous when you could stand in the water IMHO... which is the case b/t chicago and navy pier....

I won't able to make it tonight either. Weekends are probably the only time I could do it. Wish I could. I need the practice.

Shoot. Looks like nobody can go. I need to break this new wetsuit in so I'm DEFINITELY going tomorrow night at the Ohio Street Beach thingy at about 5:30 if anybody cares to join me. I have my first race June 9 and need to taper next week. I might do soem swimming next week but it'll be maybe 15-20 minute sprints.

Skipped the beach. Lots of shady people 'round those parts. Went to the pool instead. Met a fellow triathlete. She claimed she could NEVER do an Oly ... I told her that was bunk and she should sign up for one today. She said `OK' ... but I think she was just humoring me.

Anyway the wetsuit seems to have worked out. I'm going to tentatively plan an OWS at OHIO STREET BEACH on Tuesday and Wednesday just to get the feel. Nothing too hellacious. Just a swim to get the feel of the wetsuit in open water since it's been since August.

If you can make it, it's 6 p.m., Tuesday.

I am up for some OWS folks... and mcelroy, I'd be willing to go up north too

I'm thinking of just buying a wetsuit.  I'm returned the rental one today, and boy was it ever nice to swim in.

So let me know folks when you're scheduling a swim, and depending on my schedule, I would be happy to join you

I'm up for whenever after 3pm... Need to test out my wetsuit... Pigfinn, I don't know what your dimensions are, but as a craigslist hound(that's how I got the majority of my gear), I found a wetsuit possibly your size. http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/bik/345109790.html

hey everyone, I was at Fleet Feet today and they said that Ohio Street Beach has OWS every saturday morning from 8:00am-11:00am.  They have lifeguards there and a swim area to swim in.  I forgot what day they started opening with this, but if it's not now, it's soon.

Does anyone want to plan on meeting there for an OWS.  The only thing is the next Saturday I would be available would be 6/30
