Total Time = 1h 57m 1s
Overall Rank = 141/174
Age Group = M 40-44
Age Group Rank = 18/23
Pre-race routine:

Ate breakfast, drove to course and had 3rd of my race day required 3 throne stops.
Event warmup:

Had some laughs with old college buddy who was racing, haven't seen him since college. Oh yeah, wondered just how cold is that water?
Swim
  • 23m 11s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 38s / 100 yards
Comments:

Completely unexpected how much I struggled here. My chest felt compressed and I was feeling a tad claustrophobic. Perhaps my suit is too small. I almost called for lifeguard several times before 1st buoy. On top of that goggles started leaking, never leaked in pool, 1st OWS they leak! 2nd half of swim went much better and if they had 440 splits my 2nd 440 was well below 1st. Swim time also includes about 50 yard climb uphill to transition.

What would you do differently?:

Not have race day be my first OWS and westsuit swim. Practice more trapezoid swims :)
Transition 1
  • 03m 9s
Comments:

Overall, although slow T1, I am satisfied. Took awhile to catch breath, once chest was free of suit it was great relief.
Bike
  • 47m 59s
  • 13.5 miles
  • 16.88 mile/hr
Comments:

Dropped my water bottle and had to go back for it. Rider came up beside me after and told me I should have left it, but I didn't want to be charged with abandonment, even though I know there were no marshalls out there. As a lifetime golfer, I am used to self governing rules.
What would you do differently?:

More T.I.T.S.
Transition 2
  • 01m 32s
Comments:

Only 2nd race, transitions are a little slow. More practice.
Run
  • 41m 10s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 12m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out as road run, then became trail run. Many spots were single lane, lots of roots and some quick up and downs. Also had to forge a couple of creeks, muddy areas and climb over a tree blocking the course. I guess overall, it was 50/50 trail/road course. Trail definitely slowed me down, almost tripped a couple of times.
Post race
Warm down:

Looked for shade and tore apart my effort. They had slamming post race buffet breakfast, scrambled eggs, waffles, bagels, fruit

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of brick training /overweight engine.

Event comments:

This was the inuagural event organized but college kids and they did an awesome job! The RD actually raced and took 1st in his AG. If this years registrants had priority on next year's race, there would be very few spots available. I will definitely be back next year, but sign up early this one should fill up fast (only 200 spots). They even gave finisher's medals to everyone!!
Just re-connecting with a Good friend from college was worth the day, everything else I'll improve. I have to keep reminding myself where I was only 7 mos ago and how I was treating myu body. Now I AM triathlete!

Congratulations, triathlete! Great first effort, in spite of the problems with wetsuit, goggles, etc. Just knowing that you've got it in you to suck it up and get through it is a HUGE mental roadblock that you've managed to overcome. Next time (and the next, and the next) will be easier.

Good race Tim, and good seeing you again. It was a surprisingly tough course, kudos for getting it done. I'm in for the Gold Coast race, so I'll see you out there. Hopefully we'll both be better prepared for the OWS!!!

Congratulations on your race!  So how does it feel to complete your first "real" triathlon?  (Although I thought the mini last month was real.  LOL!)  You should be way proud of yourself for pulling yourself together for the second half of the swim.  But don't ya hate leaky goggles!  yeesh!

Sounds like they put on quite the spread afterwards.  My kind of race!

Congratulations, Tim!  You're a triathlete!    Honestly, I'm more impressed that you pushed through and finished than if you had said it was a cakewalk and breezed through it.  You've come really far in a short time and I have no doubts that you will continue to improve rapidly over the course of the racing season.  Nice race!

Tim!! Congrats to a new triathlete!!! Great report and way to stick it out in the swim.

I had the same thing happen to me last year where I could not catch my breath and could feel the fuel tank empty. Lungs felt constricted and lactic acid built up fast.  All I can say is that we all have good races and bad races. Any race you cross the finish is a good race! You conquered the demons of the day! Well done!!

Each race you will learn things. Build on each race and you'll do great in this sport. Your training is going well, keep it up!!

Congrats Tim!

I'm so happy to ready you didn't succumb to the evil side (to give up). I know from experience how good fells when you're done, that you didn't throw in the towel.

You had a tough time out there and you overcame. You're even looking forward to redemption for 2008. Maybe I'll join you then. Sounds like a fun race for both the size, event and most important, the post race buffet.

Dude, Congratulations on the amazing effort! Did you read your report?

1) you negative split the swim... This is a good thing!

2) you rocked on the bike... nothing wrong with that.

3) you kicked @ss on the run... The trees and stuff slowed everybody down not just you!

4) "I have to keep reminding myself where I was only 7 mos ago and how I was treating my body. Now I AM triathlete!"

And don't forget it!!!
