Pre-race routine:

Slept like crap. A combination of cats, pre-race excitement and a mystery phone call at 2:30 am....... (maybe a competitor?)

Got up at 5:00 am slipped into the Donkai Gear and layered up for the COLD weather outside.

Had 2 slices of toast with honey and 2 cups of tea and went on my way.

Rode the bike to the pool, as it's only 5 mins from our house. I took a detour to get the blood flowing. Probably 20 mins.

Registered and got my race pack. Then went to rack bike and set up my gear. I decided I was going to wear my cycling jacket for the bike leg, as it was only 5C. A wise decision as the guys in Tri-Suits looked effing cold.
Kept joggers and a top on and left transition.

Event warmup:

Tried to warm up the arms and shoulders using my pre-race routine from my swimming days.
Swim
  • 06m 10s
  • 466 yards
  • 01m 19s / 100 yards
Comments:

Didn' feel too great on the swim. The last 4 lengths were a bit messy. Guess that's to be expected with the amount of training I've been doing. I also forgot all about starting my HRM/clock.
What would you do differently?:

Simple. Train more. And do a swim in the Tri Suit every now and then to get used to the feel of that.
Transition 1
  • 03m 7s
Comments:

My racking point was the furthest from the T1 entrance an exit. Well, as I didn't fancy freezing my arse off I decided to wear socks and a cycling jacket. I also decided not to have the shoes clipped in as they are off-road shoes and easy to run in. The socks and shoes went on pretty easy but I struggled a bit with the jacket.
What would you do differently?:

Not wear a jacket I guess but at 5C I thought I'd better. Also get some Tri specific bike shoes and do the whole sock less running mount thingie.
Bike
  • 42m 18s
  • 13.05 miles
  • 18.51 mile/hr
Comments:

Really enjoyed the bike leg despite the cold and getting caught at the 1 traffic light on the course. Typical. Probably lost me 40ish seconds. I think I might have enjoyed this a bit too much and should have gone a bit harder. Still only 4 guys overtook me, so not too sloppy.
What would you do differently?:

Get some tri bars fitted and go harder.
Transition 2
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

Bit of a mess. I decided to take off the bike jacket, to show the Donkai colors in all their glory on the run course, so that took a little time. The shoes off and on was ok. But I nearly exited T2 with the helmet on, so had to track back and drop it at my racking point. Overall not good. But hey, it was my first T2.
What would you do differently?:

Practice and have bike shoes off before entering T2.
Run
  • 23m 35s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

Pretty pleased considering the amount of training I did. Had some stomach issues about half way through, so had to slow down for that. Not sure what caused it. Maybe the COLD weather.
What would you do differently?:

Do a lot more training.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked about a mile back to transition got dressed to keep out the cold and strecthed for about 10 minutes.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training and race experience. Pretty simple really. And the weather off course. Even the fast guys were a couple of minutes slower than usual.

Event comments:

Overall I'm chuffed with my first race. There was a really friendly atmosphere and the course was great. As for my performance, it's what I expected, with the limited training I did. Now bring on the next one.

Nice work on the new steed.  Took some nuts even getting out there my friend - I bet plenty of people sacked it off thanks to some great British summer time!

Cracking times too.  Makes it all worth while doesn't it!

Nice one mate

Great race, and transitions will come, but it is something you should train too. I think it was a very wise choice to go with socks and a jacket on the bike, it is easy to push when you are not cold.....well too cold
