Total Time = 57m 45s
Overall Rank = 22/251
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 3/18
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:45am. Ate 2 bagels and 1 bottle of water. Left home at 4:30am and drove 90 miles to John Sevier Park. Lost 1 hour with the time change. Honey at 7am and my Espresso Love Gu gel at 7:30.
Event warmup:

Registered, set up transition, .5 mile bike ride, .5 mile run, 100 meter swim.
  • 06m 6s
  • 350 meters
  • 01m 44s / 100 meters

Had a really good swim for me. I caught a few people and was passed by one guy but I passed him back at the end. I had trouble coming off one wall when I had to swim under the guy in the next lane.
What would you do differently?:

Seat myself a little higher..I swam this course last year in 6:48 so I improved :42.
Transition 1
  • 00m

Both T1 and T2 times were in the bike split. I had practiced transitions in my garage Saturday and it really helped.
What would you do differently?:

Both transitions were probably under 1 min each. T2 was quicker than T1
  • 33m 5s
  • 10.6 miles
  • 19.22 mile/hr

I went out and hammered this course. I passed a lot of people and was not passed by anyone. One guy missed a turn and crashed. They hauled him off in an ambulance with dislocated shoulder. Number 1 biker was just 4 mins faster, number 2 just 2 mins faster and that included the transitions. I didn't lose a lot of time here.
What would you do differently?:

I missed shifting into small chainring on 1 steep incline which would of been faster but staying in the big chainring the whole race kept from possibly dropping a chain. Last years time was 34:51 so I dropped 1:46 so I improved here too.
Transition 2
  • 00m

Was very fast in T2.
What would you do differently?:

  • 18m 35s
  • 2.6 miles
  • 07m 09s  min/mile

I think they found the hilliest streets in the area to run on. It was getting hot by now and I was cramping in the calves. I think my hammering on the bike was starting to show. I tried to keep a good cadence the entire course. Stopped for water twice. I had 1 guy that passed me early and I tried to stay with him. With .5 miles left, a girl came up on my left. No way today lady. I was hurting but reached deep down and sprinted out the last .5. Passed both the girl and the guy. This was the closest I've come to blowing chow at the end of a tri. Number 1 runner ran this course in 13:02. I need running help.
What would you do differently?:

Pratice bricks more. I improved :15 from last year.
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of water...2 more bottles of water and HEED..PB&J sandwich..

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Calves cramping on run

Event comments:

It was another Race Day Events race. Had to wait about 2 hrs for results..they ran out of cold bottled water...they had no gatorade..They had me in 4th place in AG so I left..ended up in 3rd place...I don't know why they had you send in a swim time, it was a free-for-all at the swim start. I really had a goal of 55:00 for this year so I didn't miss it by much. Strangest thing happened, while getting in line to register, a girl got in line behind me with her bike. She looked at me and said " I know you...You put yankz in my shoes at that last tri" I recognized her now. She had clipless pedals but no clipless shoes. She asked if I could change out her pedals. She had no tools so I ran the bike to my truck and changed out the pedals for her. I saw her on the bike course later and she couldn't change gears. I guess that's what they mean by "coming prepared to race." Team Magic event next and I can't wait.
