Henderson, North Carolina
United States
Set-up
65F / 18C
Precipitation
Total Time = 2h 52m 32s
Overall Rank = 124/165
Age Group = Clydsdales
Age Group Rank = 5/10
Pre-race routine:

I woke up a little late and couldn't get myself moving, so I arrived later than I would have liked. I had a bowl of cereal for breakfast.
Event warmup:

I waded into the water to get wet.
Swim
  • 31m 32s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

I beleive that the swim course was long. Many people thought it was about 5 minutes longer than they expected. I felt good this whole swim, but was shocked by the time. I felt just like I did yesterday when I swam 1200 yards straight. My sighting seemed to keep me in a straight line with almost no correction needed. I should have been between 24-26 minutes. Also, my stopwatch had me a minute faster than the official time. Go figure. I guess my stopwatch isn't calibrated.
What would you do differently?:

Train more so I can get out in front of the pack sooner.
Transition 1
  • 04m 30s
Comments:

I had a poor transition spot on my rack. Since I got there late, I was in the mud and puddles, instead of the asphalt. This meant I had to get my stuff, then go get more stuff, so it took much longer than usual. I was also dead tired from the swim, so my travel time was slow.
What would you do differently?:

Get there earlier so I could be on the pavement and some other poor soul could be in the mud.
Bike
  • 1h 13m 35s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.26 mile/hr
Comments:

My cyclocomputer wasn't working, so I had no idea of speed or distance. I just humped the entire way, and the results showed. I only had one or two long steeper hills that really slowed me down. The rest of the way, I stayed in aero and pedalled my little tushy off.
What would you do differently?:

Check my computer out pre-race.
Transition 2
  • 02m 6s
Comments:

See comments above. Plus my ass hurt after the bike, so it took a little longer than normal to get going.
What would you do differently?:

See comments above.
Run
  • 1h 00m 51s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 48s  min/mile
Comments:

I was shooting for an hour, and my watch had me at an hour plus some seconds. I actually passed some other runners, but not many. I still get blown away on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Become a faster runner.
Post race
Warm down:

Got some water, spaghetti and a banana. Talked to Chris Hughes and the Relay Team of Tri'nNC, Jenneunc and Matthew_Wise. then I packed up my crap and drove home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The rain and wind seemed to slow me down some. Also, My age, weight, genetic make-up and other biological factors might play a role.

Event comments:

This was my first Oly, and although I missed my goal, I am extremely pleased with my performance. The race was well run, with a great course, which would be much better in dry conditions.

When I crossed the line, it said my time was 2:52 and change. That would account for the differences in my swim and run times. I will go ahead and say I ran closer to 9:40 miles than 9:58 miles. Oh well.

Congrats on a good race! I'm certain the swim was long and the clock was off or something. I crossed the line faster (according to my watch and the clock) than my official results showed.

great race keith; i heard how crappy the conditions were from my run coach-- who was out there working... so ... i think you had a great performance under crappy conditions... and you FINISHED!...and you certainly were not last.   Love your race report -- you have the best adjectives going in a race report.

However, I believe that it is against USAT rules though to  hold genectic factors against yourself or your performance. take care.
