Overcast
Total Time = 1h 11m 2s
Overall Rank = 75/731
Age Group = M 30-39
Age Group Rank = 31/178
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4 am, little over 2 hour drive to race. Energy bar and water along the way. One of the first in transition area, then went off in search of coffee to no avail.
Event warmup:

Biked a couple miles, ran maybe a mile, stretched. Had a lot of time to kill, tried to stay stretched. Recognized Denise2003 from her avatar and said hi. She was talking with mndiver, so I met him and his wife also.
Swim
  • 08m 52s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 01s / 100 yards
Comments:

Yes, I am a slow swimmer. But... this is the first race I have done entirely front crawl, so I am pretty psyched anyway.
What would you do differently?:

Just need more time in the water.
Transition 1
  • 02m 22s
Comments:

Very out of breath after swim, so slow getting out of water and pretty long run to transition area.

Having just learned to leave shoes clipped in, was a little worried with this uphill bike start. Went okay, though, just waited until I was up the hill to slide my feet in.
Bike
  • 37m 29s
  • 13 miles
  • 20.81 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt just okay, didn't feel like I totally had it today.

Got out of shoes way too early - there were like 4 turns in the last 1/4 mile that it would have been nice to be clipped in for, but I didn't really know how long I had. Should have scoped out the route ahead of time.
Transition 2
  • 00m 55s
Run
  • 21m 27s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

Calves tightened up early, but refused to stop. Didn't really notice them after about 3/4 mile. Back hurt for awhile, which is new. Felt like a pretty strong run overall.
What would you do differently?:

More bricks!
Post race
Warm down:

Water, bananas, walked around a bit. Watched Chris Legh finish (wow). Found a Chipotle on the way home, yummy.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Half-mary last weekend probably didn't help. Felt a bit nauseous all day yesterday (dunno if it was pre-race nerves or nervous about daddy-daughter dance at the 5 yr old's recital last night).

Haven't biked all that much lately.

Event comments:

Huge event, very well run. Didn't stay for the post-race festivities, but it looked like there was plenty. Lots of volunteers. Only dig at all is the t-area could have been a little bigger, but not sure how they would have done that. Great event.

Sorry we didn't connect up today.  Nice rice man you smoked!  I'm with you on the T area.  The year I volunteered (2 years ago) there wasn't the section on the grass - that was ugly - it was smaller that year also)

Good job Johnny Bee!  Med-City Half Marathon did make Buffalo a little more challenging, didn't it?  And I did Oly and Albert Lea the week before Med-City.

Good job!  Buffalo is one of my favorites - they have the best bag of goodies for registering.  Glad the rain held off for most of the race.

Nice race! I agree about the bike course--it was impossible to not draft sometimes given the number of people out there. Congrats on a great race!

Great race! It's fun to accomplish something new, like you did with your first time doing freestyle the whole swim. You say you didn't have it on the bike, but you put together a good time, and a good run following.
