Comments:

Pretty good swim - glad to see that I was faster this year, after doing more intense swim training with Masters this spring. On the leg coming back my navigation sucked - ended up way to the right and had to make my way back. Didn't push hard, just tried to keep it smooth and glide.
Transition 1
  • 02m 31s
Comments:

T1 time rank was 224th out of 512 finishers.
Bike
  • 2h 53m 2s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.42 mile/hr
Comments:

Not very happy with this ride - 6 or 7 minutes slower on the second loop than on the first. A lot of the time I felt like I just had nothing in my legs, and my motivation started to drop at several points. Fortunately I decided to not try to push it, keep spinning when I could, and try to save myself for the run. I think if I had tried to make up some more time or push harder the run would not have been great.
What would you do differently?:

Ride more - nowhere near enough bike training this spring.
Transition 2
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

T2 time rank 73rd of 512
What would you do differently?:

Pretty happy with this transition, especially considering the size of the transition area.
Run
  • 1h 35m 7s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

Definitely happy with this run. I wanted to see how close to 7 minute miles I could keep my pace. Hit the first mile in 6:30, then kept the next 5 miles right at or under 7 minutes. Started having some trouble after turning for the second loop - legs started feeling crampy, then started feeling pain where I had bruised my knee yesterday, and I hit some miles closer to 8 minutes each. Rebounded around mile 10 or 11, and ran closer to 7's for the last few miles.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some food, talked with Jeff and Mike about their amazing performances.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The bike. Strangely enough, I had a really good run and swim, and those are the areas where I've done the most training this winter and spring.

Event comments:

Even though I didn't go sub-5, and the bike sucked, the rest of the race was great, and I beat last years time by 16 minutes (most of it on the run).

My three half IM races so far:
Mooseman 2007 s35:23 T1 2:31 b2:53:02 T2 1:22 r1:35:07
Mooseman 2006 s37:49 T1 3:00 b2:53:58 T2 2:14 r1:46:18
Timberman 2005 s45:39 T1 4:00 b3:02:22 T2 2:17 r2:04:25

Great to see so many BTers this weekend - HUGE congratulations to Jeff (Jackemy) and Mike (MikeJ) on just destroying their first ever halfs, both of them in just over 5 hours.

I'm glad you're happy with that run--smokin'!

Excellent progress over 3 years--especially on the run.  Maybe you just need some more squats or power cleans to help you out on the bike.

Don't worry, it won't be long before you crack 5:00.  Good luck at Timberman!

You were definately closing the gap on me between the first and second loop on the run which pushed me a little.

Great race!!  Sub-5's for you Jeff and me @ Timberman!!!

Thanks for the pictures Pat. That second one cracks me up - that woman was the one who stood there, ate a donut, and chatted for a while before we could get her going again. Fun times.
