Comments: The water was quite murky. I couldn't see the feet of the people in front of me. It was quite physical. Especially since there were no women or old people in the water. Kinda like a full contact sport. What would you do differently?: I wore blue tinted goggles and it made the orange buoys appear dark green. I need smoke tinted goggles for openwater. Transition 1
Comments: The transition area was long and skinny. My bike was way at the end near the mount line. What would you do differently?: I put my first sock on upside down and had to take it off and redo it. Bike
Comments: I had a great time on the bike. I passed about 5 disc wheels. I learned that at 35-40km an hour you can get a bit of a draft from 5 meters back. Good to know! I consumed 3 nutrigrain bars, 2 gels, and 12 eload tablets on the bike. Along with 6 bottles of Gatorade. Transition 2
Comments: T2 was very smooth. I had speed laces this time, and I even remembered to put my race number on before my shoes. I couldn't avoid the porta-potty in T2. Run
Comments: I started out the run at a 4:45/km pace. I did some quick math and realized I might break 5 hours. I'm not sure why exactly, but by about 1.5km into the run I had slowed down a lot. From that point on, my focus was on breaking 5:16:07 from the 2003 Bigfoot half. The heat was excruciating, especially being from Vancouver. Its been 15-18 degrees in Vancouver for the past 2 months. Oliver was over 35 degrees. I spent a lot of time in the aid stations (all 14 of them) cooling myself off with ice and sponges. It made it really hard to keep a good pace. My mind was more focussed on staying cool than on running fast. In the end, I beat my goal and finished under 5:16:07 for a new PB on the half Iron. Thank goodness I swam and biked faster than planned, because I was expecting to do 1:45 on the half marathon. What would you do differently?: I should probably get a cadence sensor for my bike. I think maybe my low cadence is part of the reason I run so crappy off the bike. Post race
Warm down: Tried the lake but it was too warm. Went back to my campsite and showered myself with the lawn sprinklers. Packed up my campsite, went to the awards ceremony, and then drove 4.5 hours back home. What limited your ability to perform faster: Heat. Last updated: 2007-02-07 12:00 AM

This was my second Half Ironman. The first one was the Bigfoot Half in 2003. I made a wrong turn on the bike at that race, and I only rode 85km. Even after I reported it to the race director, my results were never changed, and they have been posted on the Internet ever since. Michael Olund: 5:16:07 My job was simple on this race: I had to beat that time! I didn't want a PB posted on the internet that I never actually did, so I need to do better than that time for a new PB.
