Pre-race routine:

I wasn't sure how long it would take to get down to Fairfield so I ended up arriving and hour and a half before race time. Checked out the transition area to figure out the ins and outs. Given the short nature of the race, I didn't want to lose much time in transition.
Event warmup:

I had done aout 5 hours of landscaping on Friday afternoon and another 7 hours on Saturday. I wasn't to concerned because the race was so short but when I started to jog, I realized just how stiff I was. So I ended up doing a lot of running and stretching and felt pretty good by time the race started

Comments:

Even though this was a firdt year race, I noticed there was a lot of fast people here so I figured the pace would be quick. On top of that, there were a couple of local high school and college cross country runners. As expected, the lead pack took off like a rocket and lost touch pretty quickly. After about a 1/2 mile, one of the college runners took the lead and just dusted the field. I went out a little too fast for me and had to back off a bit as I was sucking wind pretty hard. I ended up finishing the run in 13th which I was pretty happy with.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really, maybe start off a tad slower but otherwise did okay.

Comments:

No T times were given but it went pretty smoothly
Bike
  • 29m 30s

Comments:

Given the strength of the runners in this race, I decided to just go as hard as I could on the bike (within reason) and forget I had a second run coming up. My hope was to either build up a big enough lead that I could hang on or they would come with me and burn out their legs. I past a bunch of people and moved upto 5th within the first 4 miles. Overall I was very happy with the bike, having the 5th fastest bike split, and entering T2 in 5th place.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2

Went as fast as I could as I knew the runners were coming
Run

Comments:

I went out hard and my legs felt surprisinglu good but my breathing was really labored. Not knowing how much time I had on anyone, I was literally running scared. I knew I had a group of runners who were quicker than me somewhere behind. At about 3/4 mile in, I got caught by one person. This actually helped as he got about 50 feet in front of me but I managed to keep that distance until the last 1/4 mile. However, with about 1/2 mile to go, the kid that one the first run came blowing by me. He was going so much quicker than me I had no shot to stay with him. He was the last one to pass me so I came home in 7th.
Post race
Warm down:

Just walked around and grabbed some water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing really. I am slowly racing my way back into shapr.

Event comments:

This was a first year race and really well done. The course was well marked, had tons of police and very little traffic. I would definately do this race again.

Smokin fast. It was in fairfield? Right down the street from me. Did it cost a million dollars to enter? Congrats on an awesome race!

Sweet race Mark!

You smoked all those runners on the bike...see it is great to be well rounded....you are wicked fast on the run too.

Congrats on a Podium finish even when you are slowly working yourself back to race shape...
