Pre-race routine:

KathyG, Celeb_itil and I rented a cottage together. It was a little rustic but perfect for what we needed.

We met up with Ontherun, Ron, Dexter, Marmadaddy and a couple of their kids at the packet pick-up expo. We picked up some BT tattoos and cowbells at the BT station.

We all had dinner together at Cuna-mara along with a Connecticut Bter whose name escapes me now. Very nice guy.
We had a fun dinner. I really wanted a cold beer but I had water instead.
Event warmup:

I felt really unorganized!

We rode our bikes from the cottage to the start. I swam for about 5-10 minutes to get used to the water.
Swim
  • 37m 10s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 16s / 100 yards
Comments:

typical swim start with people jostling for position. I tried to stay to the right but I still got kicked and kicked others too I'm sure.
What would you do differently?:

I think I did OK considering I haven't been training as much as I should.
Transition 1
  • 04m 3s
Comments:

I was really dizzy coming out of the water again.
I got the big man wetsuit stripper instead of the kids, and it was awesome....off in a flash!
What would you do differently?:

move faster. I have to wear socks which takes a lot of time. Last year my t1 time was >8 min! So I improved.... a lot!
Bike
  • 1h 43m 35s
  • 27.34 miles
  • 15.84 mile/hr
Comments:

Last year when I did this race it was pouring rain and that's what I mostly remember.
This year it was hot and sunny and I didn't remember that there is hill after hill.
Devil hill still sucked the life out of me.
What would you do differently?:

I brought a towel with me to the bike mount to dig all the mud and grass out of my cleats. Last year I couldn't clip in for a few miles because of that reason.
I also dropped my chain at around mile 22.
This is a tough bike course! I can't see myself driving 2 1/2 hours to practice it though. I did the best I could do.
I need to spend more time in the saddle.
Transition 2
  • 03m 7s
Comments:

I have a new aerobottle which makes it harder to rack the bike. I have to rack by the brake levers.

I knew I wasn't winning any prizes here. I changed into dry socks because I didn't want blisters. I still don't have speed laces for my shoes either.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I wasn't in a hurry.
Run
  • 1h 19m 30s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 12m 48s  min/mile
Comments:

I planned on doing a walk/run combo since my hip has been injured for a while. I haven't really been running at all. It's amazing how quickly you lose your run endurance
It was hot and humid. Not exactly the weather we are used to in early June in New England.
I saw dexter, celeb ithil and Kathy on the run course. Fun seeing peeps that you know...even if they are way in front of you.:)

The BT water station was AMAZING. The best one!! They had ICE water and people screaming your name. It was incredibly motivating!
Thanks to all the BT'ers who volunteered. You guys rock!
Marmadaddy and Ron you did a great job! Thanks!
What would you do differently?:

Not be hurt
Post race
Warm down:

After finishing I had a headache and felt kind of nauseous. I just wanted to lay down and sleep. It turned out that I was sunburned and a little dehydrated I think.
DK and I had to ride our bikes back to our cottage but we got lost and then separated. I ended up riding an extra 4 miles in the blazing sun. When I made it to the cottage...no DK. She ended up back to the race site.
I decided to skip lunch and take a nap instead.
We had pizza for dinner at huskyboy's condo with some of his friends and wife and 2 adorable daughters.
I was starving!

The next day we volunteered as body markers. Then Kathy and I worked on the bike course pointing out a left turn. It was fun seeing all the half iron people on their bikes going by twice.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Injury. not enough training, weight gain over the winter!

I ended up pretty sunburned too. The forecast said it would be overcast but it wasn't. That was my own stupid fault for not wearing sunscreen.

Event comments:

This is a great race, well organized. Lots of fun. The weather is always a big suprise. Last year it was in the 50's. This year ..80's.

Patty,

It was a great weekend hanging out with you doing the Moose thing....we had so many giggles and laughs...then the fun race began. Given your hip injury you did fantastic and look you were faster in transitions.

Faster bike split and overall faster...sweet~

Used the big man wetsuit stripper...cool!

Weather was unexpected as it always is at Moose either hot or raining and cool..this weekend we got the hot and the HIM got the cool.

I'm proud of you and you had fun which is why we do this, right?

Patty,

It was great to meet you. (although I might have met you in Hyannis...oops).

Very nice race and it seems like we kept around the same paces throughout the day. Those hills killed me on the bike.

Job well done. Glad to read that you cut your transition times down a lot from last year.

Hope to see you again at some other events!

Tom

Great work, especially with all the heat and the recent injury issues.

Thanks for pointing me back to Wellington yesterday - I was thinking of just going straight back to the condo for a beer.
