Pre-race routine:

Ate a bagel and had some orange juice, drove to the race, got marked and everything set up. Watched the long coursers go.
Event warmup:

None.
Swim
  • 00m
  • 547 yards
  • / 100 yards
Comments:

The water was COLD! Shocked me good going in. Wanted to quit on the first third of the triangle when I caught a good wave right in my mouth as I was breathing. Decided it sucked and kept going. But I didn't want to put my face in the water again. I sight/breathe on the right and the course was counter-clockwise. So I guess swimming commando-esque style helped my sighting. According to my spectators, I was right at the tail end of the mid-pack. No idea what my time was though.
What would you do differently?:

Wetsuit.
Transition 1

Comments:

Faster than the transition in my first tri. Even jogged from the water to the TA.

Comments:

I was doing alright. Ended up walking most of Dead Dog Hill. But was cruising on the backside of the dam. Was still feeling decently strong across the bridge from Pott. County to Riley County and on the flats to where Barnes Rd meets up with Tuttle Creek Blvd. Hitting the rollers on Tuttle Creek was a challenge. I walked up a couple of hills, rode down them. Ended up joining the "death by toeclips" club when I was trying to get going and went right knee first into the gravel. That knee is one that I'd injured awhile back and it was hurting like hell the day before the race. So I bloodied it up and it was starting to swell. I didn't want to risk injuring it by riding back to the TA or running the rest of the race, so I grabbed a ride in the sweep vehicle and came in with a DNF.

However, I don't regret deciding to scrap the race at this point. Finishing this race, even though it was my A race, pales in priority to not getting stuck on crutches and ending my season. I live to fight another day. And the bike is becoming my mortal enemy. I have a vendetta that can only be worked on by spending quality time with the road on my bike.
What would you do differently?:

1) More hills
2) Ride lots more.
3) Ride even more.
4) Not end up with a hurt knee.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bike strength, endurance. And toeclips.
