Subject: Recovery drink--twice a day?
Wondering: If one were to do two long workouts in a day, say a morning ride then an evening run, would it be advisable to take a recovery drink after each session or just after the second one?

Thanks,
Rob

I'd use any excuse possible to have another glass of chocolate milk.

I save my big recovery drink for the last session, but always get some sort of recovery nutrition in after every session.

Some form of nutrition after each session is best I believe, and within the first two hours.

Actually, the sooner the better, and really within one hour!

I like to take some form of nutrition in after all long workouts, just wasn't sure if it would be beneficial to take a recovery drink twice a day.

Rob, for my training (and I advise the same for my guys) I try get actual food and only use recovery drinks for sessions in which I can’t sit down and get a proper meal after I am done. IMO getting real healthy food is a lot better to help your body to recover faster from long/hard sessions than any recovery drink.

That been said, yes after every session eat/take recovery drink to help you recover faster and be ready for your second session. For instance, after my lunch session (swim/run) I drink a sport drink or milk and within 30 min I eat my lunch as my recovery meal and after my evening session (usually longer or harder) I drink sports drink or milk while I stretch and eat my dinner within 30 min as my recovery meal.

Anytime you do that you will recover faster and be able to train more and/or feel with more energy

Thanks, Jorge. That is exactly the kind of info I was looking for!

Take care,
Rob

What kind of sports drink?  What kind of milk?  I think this is where I'm lacking...any recommendations?

Somehow I can't seem to manage to get a healthy balanced meal in within the first 30-60 minutes after a training session. It takes me too long to drive home from the pool and even from the place where I park to ride the bike. So, if I have a longer (45 min plus) session planned, especially on double whammy days, I take a premixed bottle of recovery stuff with me for the drive home. That way I'm already kind of refreshed when I get home and have some strength to cook a meal! (I live alone, no one's cooking me dinner on a daily basis...)

It has made a difference since I've upped my training a month ago: from beginner "I just want to finish" Sprint training to training with an Olympic plan... I know I'm going a bit overboard for starters, but I don't have any of the over-training symptoms yet so I just keep going. And adding the recovery drinks RIGHT AFTER EVERY SESSION has something to do with it, I think. Before, I'd only eat a Clif Bar afterwards, not getting the protein/carb balance right.

I might also just be getting into better shape...one would hope

So, yes, I would say have a recovery drink twice a day. It won't hurt for sure.

I like the Clif Recovery Drink powder, French Vanilla flavor is yummy. It's mostly organic, in case you care about that. I like the fact that with the powder stuff you can dilute easily. Pre-bottled stuff is too thick for me and then you end up pouring half of it out to dilute it...

So after a workout if i can eat within say 30 minutes, do I still need the recovery drink?

I'd say you don't as long as your meal is carb/protein balanced. which is 3/4 to 1/4 I think. and keep the fats low I would say. I don't know what the perfect ratio of simple/complex carbs is. they say you should eat mostly complex carbs but then those don't fill up your empty tanks fast enough. That's why the recovery drinks have both in them. I guess a good mix of everything in moderation, as always, would be best.
