Subject: Sprint Distance Swim--Standard Distance?
I've done 4 sprints so far, and the swims have normally been 750 meters. In reading others' race reports, it seems there are a lot of sprint tris out there with 400 meter/yard swims.

Is there a standard for sprint swim distances? It seems like there is for Olympic distances, in that I haven't seen any Olympic distances with 750 meters swims--they seem to be 1640 yards.

Just wondering.

No standard for sprints per se ....... mine last month was only 250 meters.

Typically they will be between 200 - 800 for the swim, 12 - 15 for the bike and in the 5k range for the run.  But there are plenty of variations from that.

No standard for sprints; Oly is a standard 1.5K.

There is no standard distance for any of the three disciplines in a sprint race.

I have seen sprints with 250 yard swims and as long as 1000 yards, bike distances from 9.2 miles to 30K (likely longer as well, but none that I have seen) and running distances from 2 miles to 4 miles.

I stopped trying to show my PR for a spring distance, since the distances are so varied.  I did one last year with a 1/2 mile swim, then 9.2 mile bike and a 2.5 mile run, and had done another with 750 meter swim, 30K bike and 5K run.  I can't really compare the two races, since they differ so much.

USAT gives these guidelines for the different distances:

Sprint S-750m; B-20k; R-5k
Intermediate S-1500m; B-40k; R-10k
Long Course S-1.2mi; B-56mi; R-13.1mi
Ultra Distance S-2.4mi; B-112mi; R-26.2mi

According to USAT, it is the bike length that determines what type of race it is.

The Olympic distances are standard because that's what they race in the umm...Olympics. Smile

"Sprint" is an informal designation. Typically it means a race somewhere around half the distances of an Olympic. Distances are usually dictated by environmental conditions of the area where the race is being held. The most variable distance for races labelled as "Sprints" is typically the swim. This could be due to the venue, or by the athletes that the Race Director is targeting.

OOOUUU...OOOUUU...

"Sprint" is kind of a catch-all for triathlons that aren't specific Olympic (aka International), Half-Ironman (HIM/70.3), or Iron-man (IM/140.6).

They're usually shorter than an OLY, but we've got a "sprint" where the swim is 1.5 miles followed by a 20 mile bike and 4 mile run.
